LevelOne FVS-3120 — Web Smart Fast Ethernet Media Converter, RJ45 to SC Single-Mode, 20 km
Web Smart10/100 RJ45 ↔ 100Base-LXSC single-mode · 20 kmVLAN · Q-in-Q · OAM
The LevelOne FVS-3120 is a Web Smart Fast Ethernet media converter that joins a 10/100Base-TX RJ45 copper port to an SC single-mode fibre port (100Base-LX, up to 20 km), so an Ethernet link can run over fibre where copper stops at 100 metres. It suits service-provider and campus links where a 100 Mbps single-mode connection needs VLAN handling, rate limiting and remote fault reporting.
Part of LevelOne’s Web Smart converter series, the FVS-3120 adds a web interface and Telnet, 802.1Q VLAN and Q-in-Q, rate limiting, 9K jumbo frames and IEEE 802.3ah / TS-1000 OAM with dying-gasp alarm. Fibre side is 100Base-LX on SC single-mode, rated for 20 km; power comes from the included 5 V adapter.
Before you order: converters work in pairs. The far end needs 100Base-LX single-mode optics on SC; a Gigabit (1000Base-X) port or a multimode converter will not link. LevelOne does not publish the wavelength on the datasheet — a second FVS-3120 at the far end is the safe choice.
What's in the Box
- FVS-3120 Web Smart media converter
- Power adapter (5 V DC)
- CD with user manual
- Fibre patch cords and the far-end converter are not included
What It Means in Practice
- Set VLANs and Q-in-Q on the converter itself — useful when it is the hand-off point to a customer or another building’s network.
- Rate limiting caps the service speed without touching the switch behind it.
- OAM (IEEE 802.3ah / TS-1000) and dying gasp report remote faults and power loss.
- At 1.5 W typical draw it is easy to run from a small UPS.
What Will Not Work
- Gigabit: the link runs at 100 Mbps maximum.
- Multimode fibre: this unit is single-mode (100Base-LX).
- SNMP monitoring: management is via web interface and Telnet.
- PoE: the RJ45 port neither supplies nor receives power.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is “Web Smart”?
A lightly managed converter: you get a web page and Telnet for VLANs, rate limits and OAM, without the full SNMP management of larger units.
What do I need at the far end?
A second FVS-3120 is the safest match. Another device works only if it has 100Base-LX single-mode SC optics with the same wavelength — send us its model and we will check.
Can I use it without configuring it?
Yes. Out of the box it passes traffic between copper and fibre; configuration is only needed for VLAN, rate limit or OAM features.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The FVS-3120 sits between a plain converter and a fully managed one: enough control for VLAN hand-offs and remote fault alarms, in a small low-power box. Buy it in matched pairs. For Gigabit links or SNMP monitoring, step up to a managed Gigabit converter or an SFP port on one of our
network switches.
✓ Buy it if you need a 100 Mbps single-mode link up to 20 km with VLAN, Q-in-Q and OAM on the converter.
✕ Skip it if you need Gigabit, SNMP, or your fibre is multimode.
→ Also consider LevelOne GVM-1220 (managed Gigabit, single-mode 20 km) or FVT-1105/FVT-1106 for long-reach unmanaged links.
Not sure which model the other end of your link needs? Send us the fibre type, distance and the device at the far end and we will check it before you order.
