LevelOne FVM-1220 — Managed Fast Ethernet Media Converter, RJ45 to SC Single-Mode Fiber, 20 km
10/100 RJ45 ↔ 100Base-FXSC single-mode · 1310 nmUp to 20 kmWeb · OAM · Q-in-Q
The LevelOne FVM-1220 is a managed Fast Ethernet media converter that links a 10/100Base-TX copper port to 100Base-FX single-mode fibre with an SC connector, for distances of up to 20 km at 1310 nm. It is built for long fibre runs — between sites, across an industrial park or on a provider handoff — where you need to manage and diagnose the link, not just pass traffic.
Management is through a web console, with MIB files supplied for SNMP tools. The unit supports IEEE 802.3ah OAM (discovery, MIB variable response, remote loopback and dying gasp), Q-in-Q VLAN tagging, port configuration of both the local and the remote converter, bandwidth limiting in 64 kbps steps up to 100 Mbps, jumbo frames up to 9 KB and Link Fault Pass-through. Power comes from a built-in supply via a mains cord.
Before you order: Single-mode fibre only, at 100 Mbps and 1310 nm, with an SC connector. The far end must be a 100Base-FX single-mode 1310 nm port — another FVM-1220 or a matching switch port/SFP. It will not link to multi-mode fibre, to Gigabit fibre ports, or to a BIDI (single-fibre) unit.

What It Means in Practice
- A pair of FVM-1220 units bridges two copper networks over up to 20 km of single-mode fibre, using two fibres (transmit and receive).
- Remote loopback lets you test the link end-to-end from your desk, and dying gasp tells you when the far end lost power rather than the fibre being cut.
- You can set port speed, duplex and flow control on the remote unit from the local one — handy when the other end is unattended.
- Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) is sized for CCTV, SCADA, access control, VoIP and small-site uplinks; it is not a Gigabit backbone.
- Q-in-Q lets a provider or campus carry customer VLANs transparently across the link.
What Will Not Work
- It will not work over multi-mode fibre — for multi-mode choose e.g. the LevelOne FVT-2002 (ST, 2 km) or GVM-1101 (Gigabit, SC).
- It will not link to Gigabit fibre (1000Base-LX) ports.
- It cannot run over a single fibre; for single-fibre links look at the FVT-2202 BIDI set.
- It does not supply PoE.
- It has a fixed SC port, not an SFP slot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many fibres does it need?
Two single-mode fibres (one transmit, one receive), terminated SC at the converter.
Will it work with an unmanaged converter at the other end?
The data link works with any 100Base-FX single-mode 1310 nm port. The OAM and remote-configuration features need an OAM-capable managed unit at the far end, such as a second FVM-1220.
Is SNMP supported?
LevelOne supplies MIB library files for use with SNMP management software such as OpenView or SNMPc; day-to-day configuration is through the web console.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The FVM-1220 is the right tool when a long single-mode link is critical and someone needs to prove where a fault is — fibre, power or the far device. For a short in-building run, or when your core already has a
switch with a 100Base-FX SFP, a simpler unmanaged converter or SFP module costs less.
✓ Buy it if you run Fast Ethernet over single-mode fibre up to 20 km and want web management, OAM loopback and VLAN control.
✕ Skip it if you need Gigabit, have multi-mode fibre, or only have one fibre available.
→ Also consider LevelOne FVT-1103 (unmanaged, single-mode SC, 40 km) or FVT-2202 (BIDI set, single fibre, 20 km).
Send us the fibre type, distance and the equipment at both ends, and we will check the link budget and the right converter before you order.
