LevelOne GVM-1220 — Managed Gigabit Media Converter, RJ45 to SC Single-Mode, 20 km
Gigabit · 1000Base-XSC single-mode · 1310 nmUp to 20 kmWeb / SNMP · OAM
The LevelOne GVM-1220 is a managed Gigabit media converter that joins a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ45 copper port to an SC single-mode fibre port (1310 nm, up to 20 km), so an Ethernet link can run over fibre where copper stops at 100 metres. It suits campus and building-to-building links, ISP and carrier hand-offs, and any fibre run where you want to see the link status remotely.
Unlike a plug-and-play converter, the GVM-1220 can be monitored and configured: a web interface and SNMP, IEEE 802.3ah OAM for remote loopback tests and dying-gasp alarms, Link Fault Pass-through (LFP), Q-in-Q VLAN tagging and per-port bandwidth limits. It is a desktop unit with a built-in power supply — a mains power cord is in the box.
Before you order: converters work in pairs: the far end needs the same optics at the far end (1000Base-X, single-mode, 1310 nm, SC). A 100 Mbps-only fibre port will not link to this Gigabit unit.
What's in the Box
- GVM-1220 managed media converter
- Power cord (built-in power supply)
- Quick installation guide
- Declaration of conformity
- Fibre patch cords and the far-end converter are not included
What It Means in Practice
- Copper side auto-senses 10/100/1000 Mbps, so it works with older 100 Mbps equipment as well as Gigabit switches.
- Single-mode at 1310 nm covers up to 20 km — enough for most campus and metro links in Cyprus.
- With 802.3ah OAM you can loop back the remote end and see a dying-gasp alarm if the far site loses power — useful when the other end is in another building or a customer premises.
- LFP passes a fibre failure through to the copper port, so the switch behind the converter sees the link go down and redundancy (e.g. spanning tree) can react.
- Bandwidth can be capped from 0 to 1000 Mbps in 64 kbps steps — handy for a rate-limited service hand-off.
What Will Not Work
- Multimode fibre (OM1–OM4): this unit is single-mode.
- A 100Base-FX fibre port or a 100 Mbps converter at the far end.
- 10G: the fibre side is 1000Base-X only.
- PoE: the RJ45 port neither supplies nor receives power.
Key Features
Web and SNMP management
Configure port speed, duplex and flow control on the local and the remote unit, and read live port status. MIB files are provided for SNMP tools.
802.3ah OAM
OAM discovery, MIB variable response, remote loopback and dying-gasp alarm for fault-finding without a site visit.
LFP and Q-in-Q
Link Fault Pass-through, plus Q-in-Q (dual tag) with configurable ISP tag and TPID on the fibre and copper ports.
Jumbo frames and rate limit
9 KB jumbo frames, store-and-forward or cut-through, and bandwidth limiting in 64 kbps steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need at the other end?
A second GVM-1220 is the straightforward choice. A switch fibre port also works if it has a 1000Base-X single-mode 1310 nm SC port or module — send us the model and we will confirm.
Can I manage the remote converter too?
Yes. Port speed, duplex and flow control can be set on local and remote units, and OAM loopback tests the whole fibre path from one end.
Is it rack-mountable?
LevelOne publishes it as a desktop unit (127 × 156 × 32 mm). Place it on a cabinet shelf; for many links in one place, a chassis-based system is tidier — ask us.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The GVM-1220 is the converter to choose when a single-mode Gigabit link matters enough that you want to see it: OAM, LFP and SNMP turn a silent box into something your monitoring can watch. For a pure copper-to-fibre bridge with no management, an unmanaged converter is cheaper; if the far end is a switch, a 1000Base-LX SFP in one of our
network switches may remove the converter altogether.
✓ Buy it if you need a managed Gigabit link over single-mode fibre up to 20 km with remote diagnostics.
✕ Skip it if your fibre is multimode, or you only need a simple unmanaged copper-to-fibre bridge.
→ Also consider LevelOne GVT-2011 (unmanaged, 2 × SFP) or FVM-1101 for managed 100 Mbps over multimode.
Not sure which model the other end of your link needs? Send us the fibre type, distance and the device at the far end and we will check it before you order.
