The LevelOne GVT-1001 is a pocket-sized Gigabit media converter that links a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ45 port to a 1000Base-X SFP slot, so any compatible SFP module — multimode or single-mode — sets the fibre type and distance.
It draws power from a USB port, which makes it practical for fibre-to-the-laptop, test benches and temporary links; the included USB power adapter covers fixed installations. A watchdog reboots it automatically if it ever freezes, and 10K jumbo frames are supported.
Before you order: no SFP module is included. Fit a 1000BASE-X SFP that matches your fibre (e.g. SX for multimode, LX for single-mode); the wavelength depends on that module.

What It Means in Practice
- Copper side: auto-MDI/MDIX and auto-negotiation on the RJ45 port. Fibre side: whatever 1000BASE-X SFP you fit, connected with the patch cord that module needs (usually LC duplex).
- At the far end you need a device with the same kind of optic: a second converter or a switch SFP port with a matching 1000BASE-X module (same fibre type and wavelength).
- Power draw is under 1.2 W, so a laptop or switch USB port (5 V, 1 A) can run it; at 23.3 × 79 × 18.5 mm it fits in a pocket or tool bag.
- It is a plug-and-play, unmanaged converter: no IP address or configuration, it simply passes Ethernet frames between copper and fibre.
What Will Not Work
- 10G SFP+ modules or 100 Mbps (100BASE-FX) SFPs — the slot is for 1000BASE-X Gigabit modules.
- Running without an SFP module — the fibre port is an empty cage until you fit one.
- Power over Ethernet — the RJ45 port neither supplies nor takes PoE power.
- VLAN, monitoring or any managed features — this is an unmanaged converter.
