The LevelOne POI-2012 is a single-port PoE injector to IEEE 802.3af with its own built-in power supply. It merges data from a normal switch or router port with up to 15.4 W of DC power and sends both over one Ethernet cable to a PoE device up to 100 m away. Because the power supply is inside the housing, it connects to the mains with a power cord and there is no external adapter to lose. LevelOne gives it an interlocking design so several units can be mounted neatly side by side. In practice it powers a dome camera or a wireless access point in a ceiling or remote corner, from a switch that has no PoE.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the data rate and power class. LevelOne lists the data rate as 10/100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet), with power on pins 4/5 (+) and 7/8 (−). For a gigabit device such as a modern access point, a gigabit injector keeps the full speed. The output is 802.3af, 15.4 W: devices that need 802.3at (PoE+) or passive PoE will not work.
