The LevelOne SFP-2503 is a 2.5 Gbps SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 20 km at 1310 nm over a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. LevelOne positions it for campus backbones, metro aggregation and inter-building 2.5G links. It is built to the SFP MSA, so it is not tied to one switch brand. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs a switch port that supports 2.5G optics. LevelOne does not publish a 1 Gbps mode, so do not plan it for a 1G-only SFP port or expect it to link to a 1G module. For outdoor or unheated cabinets, the SFP-2603 has the same 20 km optics rated −40 to +85 °C. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
