The LevelOne SFP-2502 is a 2.5 Gbit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 2 km at 1310 nm over a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. LevelOne positions it as a short-reach single-mode option for in-building 2.5G aggregation and campus links, on SFP and SFP+ ports that support 2.5G optics. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It runs at 2.5 Gbps, so both the switch port and the module at the far end must support 2.5G — many SFP ports run only 1G, and many SFP+ ports only 1G and 10G. It needs single-mode fibre. For multimode fibre LevelOne sells the SFP-2501; for industrial sites the single-mode SFP-2602. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
