The LevelOne SFP-2604 is an industrial 2.5 Gbps SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 40 km at 1310 nm over a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. Rated from −40 to 85 °C, it is aimed at industrial metro links, telco fronthaul, smart-grid backhaul and outdoor telecom cabinets. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is a 2.5 Gbps optic: both ends must run 2.5G, so it will not link to a 1G (1000BASE) module, and the switch port must support 2.5G SFP optics — many SFP ports run 1G only and many SFP+ ports run 1G or 10G only. It needs single-mode fibre. It is a duplex (two-fibre) module at 1310 nm, not a BiDi pair: it does not pair with the 1550 nm SFP-2605. Plan an SFP-2604 at both ends. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
