The LevelOne SFP-2605 is an industrial 2.5 Gbps SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 40 km at 1550 nm over a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. It is rated from −40 to 85 °C, so it suits industrial switches in outdoor cabinets, substations and plant rooms, and LevelOne notes its 1550 nm wavelength can share fibre with CWDM/DWDM systems. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is a 2.5 Gbps optic: both ends must run 2.5G, so it will not link to a 1G (1000BASE) module, and the switch port must support 2.5G SFP optics — many SFP ports run 1G only and many SFP+ ports run 1G or 10G only. It needs single-mode fibre. Its transmitter is stronger than the commercial SFP-2505 (0 to +5 dBm), so LevelOne’s two 1550 nm modules are not interchangeable spares for each other — plan the same model at both ends. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
