The LevelOne USB-0503 gives a laptop back the two things that disappeared with the last redesign: a wired network socket and full-size USB ports. One USB-A plug becomes a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 port and three USB 3.0 sockets at up to 5 Gbps, in a 110 mm silver body weighing 46.5 g with no power supply to carry. Inside it uses a Realtek RTL8153 Gigabit controller with a VL813 hub, and the driver installs itself on current versions of Windows and macOS.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The host plug is USB-A — a laptop with only USB-C needs an adapter you supply, or the LevelOne USB-0504, which is the same unit with a USB-C plug. Everything is bus-powered with no power input at all: it cannot charge the notebook, and the Gigabit controller plus three USB ports all draw from one host socket, so a bus-powered hard drive alongside heavy network traffic is more than it should be asked to carry. The Ethernet port shares the single 5 Gbps USB link with the three USB ports. LevelOne does not publish a per-port current figure or the host cable length.

Buy it if
Your laptop has no Ethernet socket and the network has to be wired. You want three full-size USB ports back in the same dongle. You need Wake-on-LAN, VLAN tagging or Energy Efficient Ethernet on a machine that has none of them.
Skip it if
Your laptop only has USB-C — take the USB-0504. You want the adapter to charge the notebook or drive a monitor: it does neither. You plan to run bus-powered hard drives alongside heavy network traffic.
