Lexar NS100 512GB — 2.5" SATA SSD

512GBSATA III 6Gb/sUp to 550 MB/s read256TBW

Lexar NS100 512GB is a 2.5-inch 7 mm SATA internal SSD on SATA III 6Gb/s, rated up to 550 MB/s read, built for everyday laptop and desktop upgrades from a hard drive.

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the simplest upgrade there is for an older laptop or desktop that still boots from a hard drive: it uses the same SATA data and power connectors, so there is no new slot, no BIOS setting and no adapter card to worry about. What you get is a system that starts, opens programs and searches files in seconds instead of minutes, runs silently and survives the knocks that kill spinning disks.

Installation takes a few minutes: power down, unplug, remove the old drive or fit this one in a free bay, connect SATA data and power, and either clone your old system or install Windows fresh. After that there is nothing to maintain — Windows detects the SSD and turns off defragmentation automatically, and TRIM keeps write performance steady over the years. Keep at least 10–15% of the drive free; every SSD slows down and wears faster when it is run completely full.

What's in the Box

  • Lexar NS100 512GB SSD (Lexar does not list accessories — no bracket or cable)

What It Means in Practice

  • Plugs into any standard SATA data + power connector — the same cables your current 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive uses.
  • Speed is capped by the SATA 6Gb/s interface (about 550 MB/s in practice); the big change compared with a hard drive is access time, not just MB/s.
  • On a SATA II (3Gb/s) port it still works, but sequential speed drops to roughly half.
  • 512GB formatted shows slightly less in Windows (decimal vs binary units) — this is normal for every drive.
  • Lexar publishes the read speed only; write speed is lower and not specified — fine for a boot drive, less ideal if you constantly copy very large files.

What Will Not Work

  • M.2-only laptops and mini PCs without a 2.5-inch drive bay — this drive needs a SATA bay and connector.
  • External use on its own: to plug it in by USB you need a separate 2.5" USB enclosure or adapter.
  • NVMe speeds: no SATA drive goes beyond the ~550 MB/s limit of the SATA interface.

Key Features

Fast boot
Up to 550 MB/s read — Windows and applications load in a fraction of hard-drive time.

Rugged
No moving parts; 1500G shock and 20G vibration rated — safe in laptops that travel.

Cool & silent
Draws less power and runs cooler than a hard drive, so laptop batteries last longer.

Easy setup
Standard 2.5-inch SATA — a direct swap for the drive already in your machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a bracket to fit it in a desktop?
Desktop cases with only 3.5-inch bays need a 2.5" to 3.5" mounting bracket, which is not included. Many current cases already have 2.5" mounting points.
Can I move my existing Windows installation onto it?
Yes. Connect it alongside the old drive (or through a USB adapter on a laptop) and clone with a disk-cloning tool, then swap the drives. A clean Windows install is the alternative if you prefer to start fresh.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The NS100 is Lexar's mainstream SATA drive: a published read speed and TBW rating, with write speed left unspecified. As a boot drive the difference from a hard disk is night and day; for heavy, sustained writing a drive with a published write figure is the safer choice. Browse our internal SSD range to compare capacities and interfaces side by side.
✓ Buy it if you want a straightforward 2.5-inch SATA replacement for a slow laptop or desktop hard drive.
✕ Skip it if you edit large video files all day or your system takes only M.2 drives.
→ Also consider the NS100 1TB or 2TB if you keep photos and media on the same drive.
Not sure it fits? Send us the exact model of your laptop, PC or motherboard and we will check the drive bay or M.2 slot before you order.
