LG UltraGear 27GX790B — 27″ OLED, QHD at 540 Hz, 0.02 ms GtG

540 Hz QHD (720 Hz Dual-Mode)0.02 ms GtGDisplayHDR True Black 50099.5% DCI-P3

The LG UltraGear 27GX790B is a 27-inch flat 16:9 gaming monitor built on a fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel, running QHD 2560 × 1440 at up to 540 Hz with a 0.02 ms grey-to-grey response. A Dual-Mode setting drops the panel to 1920 × 1080 and lifts the refresh rate to 720 Hz for competitive shooters. Because it is OLED rather than a backlit LCD, contrast is effectively per-pixel — LG quotes 1,500,000:1 — and it carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification along with 99.5% DCI-P3 coverage. It is a monitor for people who play fast games and care about motion clarity above everything else.

Compatibility — check before buying:
A few things this monitor deliberately does not do. It has no built-in speakers — audio goes out through the 3.5 mm 4-pole headphone jack, which does carry microphone passthrough, and DTS Headphone:X virtual surround needs a headset to be of any use. The USB-C port carries video and data only; LG publishes no Power Delivery wattage for it, so do not plan on charging a laptop through it. To reach 540 Hz at QHD you need a graphics card and a cable capable of it — the supplied DisplayPort 2.1 cable is the one to use, and HDMI 2.1 will not necessarily match it. Note also that this is a flat 16:9 panel at 2560 × 1440, not an ultrawide and not 4K. On resolution and refresh rate together, 540 Hz is achieved at QHD; the 720 Hz figure applies only in the downscaled 1080p Dual-Mode.

Best For

✓ Competitive shooters and fast-paced esports
✓ Players who value motion clarity over pixel count
✓ HDR gaming that benefits from true per-pixel blacks
✓ Colour-critical work alongside gaming — 99.5% DCI-P3
✓ Setups already running a headset rather than speakers
✓ Rooms where OLED contrast can actually be seen

Key Features

540 Hz at QHD, 720 Hz in Dual-Mode
QHD 2560 × 1440 at up to 540 Hz is the headline, and a Dual-Mode setting switches the panel to 1920 × 1080 at up to 720 Hz when a competitive title benefits more from frames than from pixels. Both modes are on the same panel — no compromise is made to support the other.

0.02 ms grey-to-grey
Genuinely grey-to-grey, not an MPRT figure quoted as if it were response time. OLED pixels switch without the transition smear an LCD produces, which is why motion on this panel looks different rather than merely measuring better.

DisplayHDR True Black 500 with 99.5% DCI-P3
A real VESA certification rather than a bare HDR10 tick. LG quotes 335 cd/m² typical brightness and a 1,500 nit peak on small highlights, with a 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio — the True Black tier is the one that matters for HDR on an OLED.

Adaptive sync from every direction
NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA AdaptiveSync certification all at once, so tear-free variable refresh works whichever card you own. DisplayPort 2.1 with DSC carries the bandwidth the panel needs.

Warranty
Warranty 1-Year Warranty (Singular)
Manufacturer Term LG does not state a warranty term in years on this model’s own product or support pages; its EU energy-label declaration for this model records a 1-year general guarantee, alongside an 8-year commitment for spare parts and software support, which is a support-availability figure rather than a warranty. Singular’s direct warranty is 1 year; beyond that we assist you with the manufacturer’s warranty process for its full duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get 540 Hz and 720 Hz at the same time?
No — they are two modes. At the panel’s native QHD 2560 × 1440 the maximum is 540 Hz. Dual-Mode switches the display to 1920 × 1080 and raises the ceiling to 720 Hz, which is aimed at competitive shooters where frames matter more than detail. You choose per game, in the monitor’s own menu.
What do I need to actually reach 540 Hz?
A graphics card that can output QHD at that rate and a connection with the bandwidth for it. Use the supplied DisplayPort 2.1 cable — it is the port with DSC and the headroom the panel needs. HDMI 2.1 is present on two inputs and is fine for consoles, but do not assume it matches DisplayPort here. Tell us your graphics card and we will confirm what it will drive.
Can I charge my laptop from the USB-C port?
No. LG lists the USB-C port for DisplayPort Alt Mode video and data, and publishes no Power Delivery wattage for it. If you want a single-cable laptop setup with charging, this is the wrong monitor in the range — ask us and we will point you at one that does it.
Are there speakers built in?
No. The monitor has a 3.5 mm 4-pole headphone jack with microphone passthrough and DTS Headphone:X virtual surround processing, which is designed around a headset. If you want sound without headphones you need external speakers.
Singular Expert Insight
This is a specialist panel and worth buying for the right reason. At 27 inches, QHD is the resolution that lets a card actually feed 540 Hz — the same money spent on 4K would give you a fraction of the refresh rate, and on this size QHD is sharp enough that most people would rather have the frames. The OLED part is what makes the motion look different rather than just measure better, and True Black 500 is a real HDR tier rather than a badge. Where it asks something of you: no speakers, no USB-C charging, and a graphics card capable of feeding it. Also check your room — OLED contrast is wasted in bright sunlight. If you want a single-cable work monitor rather than a competitive gaming one, look at our PC monitors section instead, and graphics cards covers what will actually drive 540 Hz.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You play fast, competitive games and want the clearest motion available at a resolution a real graphics card can feed. OLED contrast, 0.02 ms GtG, 540 Hz at QHD and 720 Hz in Dual-Mode are the reasons this exists, and adaptive sync works with any card.

Skip it if

You want a single-cable laptop setup — the USB-C port does not charge. Skip it too if you need built-in speakers, if you want 4K rather than QHD, or if the screen will sit in bright daylight where OLED contrast is wasted.

Also consider

An LG UltraFine or similar IPS panel if this is mostly a work monitor and you want USB-C charging and speakers. A 4K gaming panel if resolution matters more to you than refresh rate.
