Lindy 42635 — 10 m Active USB 2.0 Extension with 4 Ports

10 m in one runChain two units to 20 m4 x USB-A at the far endShielded, gold-plated

The Lindy 42635 carries USB 2.0 a full 10 metres and ends in a four-port hub, so one cable can serve a scanner, a keypad and a dongle at a counter on the other side of the room. The cable is the serious part: a 5 mm jacket over tinned copper in 28 and 24 AWG with a 65 per cent aluminium-magnesium braid, and gold-plated connectors at both ends. Lindy also publishes what most makers leave vague — two of these units can be chained to reach 20 m.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps, not a 5 Gbps hub. It exists to cover distance, so keyboards, scanners, printers, keypads and dongles are the right load; moving large files off a drive at the far end will be slow. The plug is USB-A. The unit is bus-powered but carries a 3.5 / 1.35 mm DC socket for an external 5 V supply, which is not included — add one when several devices hang off the far end. Lindy’s published limit is two units chained for 20 m; beyond that the answer is a different technology, not another extension.

Best For

✓ Scanners, keypads and label printers away from the PC
✓ Reception and counter positions with the computer locked away
✓ Workshops, stockrooms and warehouse benches
✓ Kiosks and digital signage machines mounted out of reach
✓ Meeting rooms where the PC sits behind the display
✓ Runs that may need to grow to 20 m later

Key Features

10 m now, 20 m if you chain
Lindy states that two of these hubs can be chained for a 20 m total run. That is a published figure rather than an assumption, which matters when you are planning a cable route you cannot easily redo.

A cable built for the distance
5 mm jacket, tinned copper conductors in 28 and 24 AWG, a 65 per cent aluminium-magnesium braid and gold-plated connectors. Long USB runs fail on shielding and contact quality long before they fail on length.

Four ports where they are needed
The far end carries four USB-A sockets, so one run serves a whole counter instead of three cables back to the machine.

Optional power for busy ends
A 5 V DC socket takes an external supply when four devices at the end of 10 m ask for more than the host will send. The adapter is not supplied, so budget for one if the far end will be busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can I actually go?
10 m with one unit, and 20 m with two chained — that second figure is Lindy’s own published limit, not an estimate. Past 20 m, USB stops being the right tool; tell us the distance and the device and we will look at a network or fibre-based approach instead.
Do I need to buy a power supply as well?
Not always. One or two low-draw devices at the far end normally run off the host port. Add a 5 V supply to the DC socket when you are hanging four devices off the end, or when a powered scanner or reader keeps disconnecting.
Will an external drive work at the far end?
It will connect, but at 480 Mbps a large copy takes hours. This cable was built to reach a device, not to move files. Keep storage next to the computer and put the scanner, keypad or printer at the far end.
How does it compare with a shorter USB 3.0 hub?
Different jobs entirely. A 5 Gbps hub sits next to the machine and moves data quickly over 20 or 30 cm. The 42635 is ten metres of shielded cable that happens to end in four ports. If the devices are within reach of the desk, buy the faster hub.
Singular Expert Insight
The failure mode with long USB runs is almost never the port count — it is the cable, and cheap 10 m extensions drop devices intermittently in a way that is miserable to diagnose. Lindy publishes the construction here (28/24 AWG tinned copper, 65 per cent braid, gold contacts) precisely because that is what you are paying for. The other genuinely useful number is the chaining limit: two units, 20 m, stated rather than implied. Past that, or if the far end is a printer, a networked model behind a network switch is the more robust answer. For a counter that needs a scanner and a couple of USB flash drives, this is exactly right.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You need reliable USB sockets about 10 m from the computer for low-speed devices, with the option to chain a second unit to 20 m later.

Skip it if

Skip it if the devices are within a couple of metres of the machine, if you need 5 Gbps speeds, or if the far end is an external drive you will copy large files to.

Also consider

A short 5 Gbps hub if everything sits on the desk, or a networked printer with a switch if the long run exists only to reach a printer.
