How to choose a computer monitor
- Size and resolution together. Full HD looks sharp up to 24 inch. At 27 inch choose QHD (1440p) or 4K; at 32 inch choose 4K. Ultrawide (21:9 or 32:9) replaces two monitors side by side.
- Ports. Match the monitor inputs to your computer (HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C). A USB-C monitor with power delivery charges a laptop and carries video, USB and often Ethernet over one cable; check that the wattage covers your laptop.
- Panel and refresh rate. IPS for accurate colour and wide viewing angles, VA for higher contrast, OLED for the deepest blacks. 75 to 100 Hz makes office work smoother; 144 Hz and above is for gaming.
- Ergonomics. Business models usually have height-adjustable stands, eye-care modes and VESA mounting. For dual screens or more desk space, add a monitor arm.
