MSI B550 GAMING — AMD B550, Socket AM4, ATX, PCIe 4.0, Dual M.2, USB-C 10 Gbps

AMD B550, Socket AM4PCIe 4.0 x16 from CPU2x M.2 + 6x SATA 6Gb/sFlash BIOS Button

The MSI B550 GAMING, product ID 7C56-093R, is a full-size ATX motherboard on the AMD B550 chipset for Socket AM4 — the platform that still makes the most sense for a value-focused Ryzen build or an upgrade to an existing AM4 machine. It takes AMD Ryzen 5000 and 3000 Series desktop processors and Ryzen 4000 G-Series APUs, with four DDR4 DIMM slots to 128 GB and A-XMP overclocking to DDR4-4866+. The primary PCI-E x16 slot runs at PCIe 4.0 straight from the CPU, and storage is generous for the class: two M.2 slots — the first PCIe 4.0 x4 or SATA and long enough for 22110 drives — plus six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Rear connectivity includes USB 10 Gbps in both Type-A and Type-C, a Flash BIOS Button for updating the firmware with no CPU installed, DisplayPort and HDMI for APU builds, and Realtek 8111H Gigabit LAN with Realtek ALC897 7.1-channel audio. Four EZ Debug LEDs make a failed boot diagnosable at a glance. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Several things to confirm before you order, because AM4 has more edge cases than most platforms. CPU support covers Ryzen 5000 and 3000 Series and Ryzen 4000 G-Series, but MSI states it is not compatible with the Ryzen 5 3400G or the Ryzen 3 3200G — those two Picasso APUs are excluded. There is no support for Ryzen 7000 or newer, which are AM5 and physically different. Onboard video works only with an APU (a G-Series or equivalent chip with integrated graphics), and the outputs are modest: HDMI is version 1.4, capped at 4K 30 Hz, while DisplayPort 1.2 reaches 4K 60 Hz — so if you are driving a 4K display from an APU, use DisplayPort. Note that some retail listings for this board claim HDMI 2.1; MSI’s own specification says HDMI 1.4, and that is what we quote. Two more layout points: installing a PCIe SSD in the second M.2 slot disables the second x16 slot (PCI_E2), and that second x16 slot is electrically PCIe 3.0 x4, not x16. Finally, there is no Wi-Fi and the network port is 1 Gigabit, not 2.5G. ECC UDIMM memory is accepted but runs in non-ECC mode.
Key Features

PCIe 4.0 x16 direct from the CPU
The primary graphics slot is fed by the processor at PCIe 4.0, which is the headline advantage B550 has over the older B450. On a Ryzen 5000 build that means full-bandwidth support for current graphics cards and, on the first M.2 slot, PCIe 4.0 SSD speeds.

Two M.2 slots, one of them PCIe 4.0 x4
M.2_1 comes from the CPU and supports PCIe 4.0 x4 or SATA drives up to the long 22110 length; M.2_2 comes from the chipset at PCIe 3.0 x4. Two NVMe drives on a board at this price is not a given, and the 22110 support matters for datacentre-derived SSDs.

USB 10 Gbps in both Type-A and Type-C on the rear
Not just a token USB-C. The rear panel carries a 10 Gbps Type-C and a 10 Gbps Type-A alongside 5 Gbps Type-A and four USB 2.0 ports, and the front-panel headers add another 5 Gbps Type-C plus two 5 Gbps Type-A and four USB 2.0.

Flash BIOS Button
Update the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU, no memory and no graphics card installed. On an AM4 board that is genuinely useful: it is how you make an older board accept a newer Ryzen without borrowing a compatible processor first.

4x EZ Debug LED
Four LEDs for CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT. When a build does not post, they tell you which subsystem to look at in seconds rather than by swapping parts — the single most useful diagnostic feature on a mainstream board.

Seven fan headers plus RGB and ARGB
One CPU fan, one pump/system combo header and six system fan headers, all 4-pin, which is more cooling control than most ATX boards in this bracket. Lighting is covered by one 12 V JRGB header and two 5 V addressable JARGB_V2 headers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work with my Ryzen 5 3400G?
No. MSI states explicitly that this board is not compatible with the Ryzen 5 3400G or the Ryzen 3 3200G. Those are Picasso-generation APUs and B550 does not support them. Ryzen 4000 G-Series APUs and Ryzen 3000 and 5000 Series processors are supported.
Can I run a 4K monitor from the onboard graphics?
Yes, but use DisplayPort. The DisplayPort output is 1.2 and reaches 4K at 60 Hz; the HDMI output is 1.4 and caps at 4K 30 Hz, which is uncomfortable for desktop use. Both require a CPU with integrated graphics — with a standard Ryzen 5000 chip there is no video from the board at all.
Some listings say this board has HDMI 2.1. Which is right?
MSI’s own specification sheet says HDMI 1.4 with a maximum of 4K 30 Hz, and that is the figure we publish. Third-party price-comparison entries for this part number list HDMI 2.1, but the manufacturer’s specification is the one to plan around. If 4K 60 Hz from the iGPU matters to you, use the DisplayPort output.
Why does my second x16 slot stop working when I add an SSD?
Because the second M.2 slot and the PCI_E2 slot share chipset lanes. MSI documents this: install a PCIe SSD in M.2_2 and PCI_E2 becomes unavailable. Plan the layout before building — if you need both, put the second SSD on SATA or use a different board.
What does the Flash BIOS Button do?
It updates the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU, no memory and no graphics card fitted. On AM4 that solves the classic chicken-and-egg problem where a board shipped with older firmware will not post with a newer Ryzen, and you would otherwise need to borrow an older processor to perform the update.
Does it have Wi-Fi or 2.5 Gigabit networking?
Neither. Networking is a single Realtek 8111H Gigabit port and there is no onboard wireless. If you need Wi-Fi, add a PCIe or USB adapter; if you need 2.5G, either add a network card or choose a board that includes it.
Singular Expert Insight
B550 remains a sensible platform in 2026 for one specific reason: AM4 processors and DDR4 memory are inexpensive, and a Ryzen 5000 chip on a board like this still builds a machine that does real work. What you are buying here is the useful half of the B550 feature set at the price end of the range — PCIe 4.0 on the primary graphics slot and the first M.2, two NVMe slots, six SATA ports, 10 Gbps USB in both connector shapes, and a Flash BIOS Button that makes the board serviceable without a spare CPU. What you are not buying is Wi-Fi, 2.5 Gigabit networking, or a modern display output from the iGPU: HDMI 1.4 at 4K 30 Hz is the specification, and that is worth knowing before you plan an APU build around a 4K screen. The other thing to design around is the shared-lane behaviour, where a PCIe SSD in the second M.2 slot switches off the second x16 slot. Understand those three limits and it is a well-equipped, well-instrumented board. Browse our memory range for the DDR4 kits this board takes, and see our PC power supplies section for the rest of the build.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You are building or upgrading an AM4 machine with a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 processor and want PCIe 4.0, two M.2 slots, six SATA ports and 10 Gbps USB-C without paying for features you will not use.

Skip it if

You need Wi-Fi, 2.5 Gigabit LAN, or 4K 60 Hz over HDMI from an integrated GPU. Also skip it if you are building on Ryzen 7000 or newer, which needs an AM5 board, or if your CPU is a Ryzen 5 3400G or Ryzen 3 3200G.

Also consider

AM5 motherboards for Ryzen 7000 and newer builds, B550 boards with onboard Wi-Fi and 2.5G LAN where connectivity matters, or DDR4 memory kits and AM4 processors to complete this build.
