NETGEAR Orbi 870 RBE872 — Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 for the Whole House, in Two Units
BE21000 tri-band Wi-Fi 7Router + satellite included10 Gig internet portUp to 5,000 sq ft
The NETGEAR Orbi 870 Series RBE872 is a two-piece Wi-Fi 7 mesh system — one RBE871 router and one RBE870 satellite in the same box — rated BE21000 across three bands with ten streams of Wi-Fi. The router carries a 10 Gig internet port and four 2.5 Gigabit LAN ports, and the satellite adds four more 2.5 Gigabit ports at the far end of the house. NETGEAR publishes coverage of up to 5,000 sq ft, roughly 465 m², and support for up to 150 connected devices. Each unit holds eight internal antennas with high-power amplifiers.
Compatibility — check before buying:
One design point decides whether this is the right Orbi for you: the 870 Series uses a shared 5 GHz and 6 GHz backhaul rather than a dedicated backhaul band. That keeps the price down and works well in most homes, but it means the link between router and satellite shares airtime with your devices. If the property is large or the satellite sits far away, wired 2.5 Gigabit backhaul is supported and is the better answer where a cable can be run. Also note that NETGEAR Armor is included as a 30-day subscription and continues only on a paid plan, and Smart Parental Controls carries premium plan fees.
Best For
✓ Homes of roughly 400 to 465 m² over two floors
✓ Households with Wi-Fi 7 phones, laptops and televisions
✓ Fibre connections faster than a gigabit
✓ Homes with many simultaneous devices, up to 150
✓ Replacing a router plus extenders with one roaming network
✓ Setups where a wired backhaul cable can be run between floors
Key Features
Tri-band BE21000 Wi-Fi 7
2.4 GHz at 688 Mbps, 5 GHz at 8640 Mbps and 6 GHz at 11520 Mbps, across ten streams. The 6 GHz band is the reason to buy Wi-Fi 7 — it is uncrowded and, at short range, dramatically faster.
A 10 Gig front door
The router takes internet at up to 10 Gigabit, so the mesh is not the limit even on the fastest fibre package available. Four 2.5 Gigabit LAN ports handle wired machines.
2.5 Gigabit ports on the satellite too
The satellite is not a dead end. It brings four 2.5 Gigabit ports to the other side of the house, which suits a home office, a media room or a games console far from the router.
One network name across the property
Router and satellite present a single Wi-Fi network. Devices move between them without dropping calls or restarting streams, which is the practical difference between mesh and a plug-in extender.

Singular Expert Insight
The 870 Series is the sensible middle of the Orbi Wi-Fi 7 range, and its one real compromise is stated plainly above: the backhaul is shared rather than dedicated. For a typical two-storey home that is not a problem, and the money saved against the quad-band 970 Series buys a lot of coverage. Two things genuinely raise this system above a cheaper mesh: the 10 Gigabit internet port, which means the router will not cap a future fibre upgrade, and the four 2.5 Gigabit ports on the satellite, which turn the far end of the house into a proper wired location rather than a Wi-Fi-only corner. If your coverage problem is a single stubborn room rather than the whole property, a wall-plug unit from our range boosters range solves it for a fraction of this price and we will say so. Send us the size and shape of the house and we will tell you whether two units are enough.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want Wi-Fi 7 across a home of up to roughly 465 m², with a 10 Gigabit internet port and 2.5 Gigabit wired ports at both ends of the house.
Skip it if
You only have one weak room, or you want a dedicated backhaul band — the 870 Series shares its 5 GHz and 6 GHz backhaul with client traffic.
Also consider
The Orbi 970 Series if you want quad-band with dedicated backhaul, or a single plug-in range extender if the problem is one dead spot rather than the whole property.
