The NETGEAR ProSAFE AGM731F is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for multimode fibre, running 1000BASE-SX over an LC duplex connection. NETGEAR’s installation guide gives 275 m on OM1, 275–550 m on OM2 and 550 m on OM3. It is the standard short-reach fibre optic for NETGEAR managed and smart switches, used for uplinks and building links inside one site. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short LC patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It runs at 1 Gbps only. NETGEAR notes that some SFP+ ports on its smart switches accept 1G SFPs and detect the speed, but a 1G module never gives 10G. It needs multimode fibre and an SX module at the far end. Its sibling AGM732F is the 1000BASE-LX single-mode version — order that one for fibre between buildings. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
