In-line controls handle answer, end, mute and volume with indicator lights, the boom carries a noise-cancelling microphone tuned 100 Hz to 10,000 Hz, and the whole cable run is 217 cm, which is enough to reach a tower under a desk. Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things worth knowing before you order. The headset is USB-C, and the bundled passive USB-C to USB-A adapter is what makes it work on older desktops — keep it with the headset. And in 3.5 mm mode you lose the in-line controls: the cable is in two segments joined at the controller, and the controller is the USB half, so on a tablet or phone you get audio and microphone but the answer, mute and volume buttons belong to the USB path. Does the Blackwire 5220 have active noise cancellation?
No. The ear cushions isolate passively and the microphone is noise cancelling, which keeps your office out of the caller’s ear rather than out of yours. If your staff need quiet for themselves, that is a different class of headset and we can point you at the models that have it.
What happens when I use the 3.5 mm plug?
You get audio and microphone, but not the in-line buttons. The controller is part of the USB half of the cable, so on a tablet or phone you control the call from the device instead. If the exact behaviour on a particular phone matters, tell us the model and we will test it.
Is there a single-ear version?
Yes, the Blackwire 5210. Same connectors, same cable, same microphone, one ear instead of two. It is the right choice where people need to hear colleagues at the same desk; the 5220 is better where concentration matters.
Will it work on a computer with separate microphone and headphone sockets?
Only with a splitter, which is not in the box. The 3.5 mm plug is a single four-pole headset jack. On any machine with a USB port you are better off using the USB-C connection or the supplied USB-A adapter, which also gives you the in-line controls.
