How to choose memory
- Generation. DDR5, DDR4 and DDR3 are not interchangeable; the notch is in a different place. Use the type your motherboard or laptop supports.
- Desktop or laptop. Desktops use full-size DIMMs; laptops and mini PCs use shorter SO-DIMMs. Many thin laptops have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded.
- Capacity and kits. Use matched kits for dual-channel performance. 16 GB suits office work; 32 GB and more suits CAD, video editing and virtual machines.
- Servers and branded systems. Servers often need ECC registered memory. For Dell, HP, Lenovo and other branded PCs and servers, system-specific memory is matched to the exact model.
