Optical drives for installing software, reading archives and burning discs: slim external USB DVD writers for laptops and mini PCs without a drive, internal SATA DVD and Blu-ray writers for desktops, and floppy disk drives for legacy equipment and archives.
How to choose an optical drive
- External or internal. Most laptops and many desktops no longer have a drive bay. An external USB writer needs no installation and moves between computers. Internal drives need a free 5.25-inch bay and a SATA port.
- DVD or Blu-ray. DVD writers read and write CDs and DVDs. Blu-ray writers also read and write Blu-ray discs (up to 100 GB on BDXL) for archives and video.
- Connection. External writers use USB-A or USB-C; some need two USB ports for power on older laptops.
- Playing films. Windows does not include DVD or Blu-ray video playback; you may need separate playback software.
