The PLANET GT-802S is a Gigabit media converter that connects a 10/100/1000Base-T copper device to single-mode fiber with SC connectors, at 1310 nm over up to 20 km. It is part of PLANET’s GT-80x series (hardware v6), built in a compact metal case for comms rooms and network cabinets.
Use it to join buildings or sites over single-mode fiber when one side has only RJ45 ports, or as a pair to make a long copper-to-copper Gigabit link over fiber.
Before you order: Single-mode 9/125 µm, 1310 nm, two fibers, SC connectors. It will not work on multimode fiber, with 850 nm 1000Base-SX equipment, or with single-fiber BiDi devices. Some distributor listings show 10 km; PLANET’s current product page and user manual specify 20 km.

What It Means in Practice
- Typical job: building A switch → copper → GT-802S → single-mode fiber up to 20 km → GT-802S or a switch with a 1000Base-LX SFP in building B.
- Link Fault Pass-through (LFP with LLCF and LLR), switchable by DIP switch, makes a fiber or copper failure visible on the other side.
- 9K jumbo frames, flow control (full duplex) and back pressure (half duplex), store-and-forward at wire speed.
- Optical budget: TX -3 to -9.5 dBm, RX sensitivity -20 dBm.
- Wall mount, or slide into PLANET MC-700 / MC-1500 series chassis for rack installation; a DIN-rail kit is optional.
What Will Not Work
- Multimode fiber — single-mode only.
- 850 nm SX equipment or BiDi single-fiber units at the far end.
- LC or ST panels without suitable patch cords — the unit has SC.
- Industrial environments — rated 0 to 50 °C.
- PoE — the RJ45 port does not supply power.

PLANET’s GT-80x converters are a dependable building block for long single-mode links, and the chassis option makes them easy to scale in a comms room. Check the fiber is single-mode (yellow) and the panel is SC. If the far end is a managed switch, one of our switches with SFP ports with an LX SFP completes the link without a second converter.
✓ Buy it if you need a Gigabit link over single-mode fiber on SC panels, up to 20 km.
✕ Skip it if your fiber is multimode, you have only one free core (use a BiDi pair), or the site needs an industrial temperature range.
