The PLANET MGB-TLX is an industrial Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre: 1000BASE-LX at 1310 nm over a dual LC connection, up to 20 km, with digital diagnostics. It is PLANET’s wide-temperature LX module, rated from −40 to 85 °C, for industrial switches linking buildings, substations and roadside cabinets. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs more than a few hundred metres: the 9/125 µm fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs two single-mode fibres and a 1310 nm LX module at the far end; it will not run on multimode fibre or pair with PLANET’s single-strand MGB-TLA / MGB-TLB BiDi modules. PLANET rates it up to 20 km — some listings describe it as a 10 km module, so do not buy a longer-reach part for runs within 20 km. For indoor racks, the MGB-LX (0 to 60 °C) has the same optics. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (9/125 µm) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
