The PLANET QSFP-40G-SR4 is a 40 Gbit QSFP+ transceiver for multimode fibre: four parallel lanes at 850 nm over an MPO/MTP trunk, reaching 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4, with digital diagnostics. It is the short-reach 40G optic for PLANET switches with QSFP+ ports and for other MSA-compliant 40G ports, used for uplinks and stacking links inside one data room. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It has an MPO/MTP connector, so a normal LC duplex patch cord will not fit — you need a multimode MPO trunk, which is not included. Reach is 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4. For single-mode runs between buildings PLANET offers the QSFP-40G-LR4 with LC connectors; the two do not link to each other. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
