The Plustek SmartOffice PS406U Plus is a desktop A4 duplex document scanner with a 100-sheet feeder that scans at up to 40 pages per minute, aimed at healthcare, banking, tax and document-management offices that digitise mixed paperwork every day. It connects to one PC or Mac over USB 2.0. It is a USB scanner for one workstation, with the feeder size and ultrasonic double-feed detection normally found on larger departmental machines.

Ultrasonic double-feed detection, mixed-batch feeding of different paper sizes and plastic cards, and Plustek DocAction Plus with built-in OCR make it a straightforward desktop workhorse. Automatic cropping, deskew and image enhancement run during the scan, and Plustek OCR (Windows) or DocOCR (Mac) turns pages into searchable PDF and editable files. TWAIN and ICA drivers connect it to most document-management, banking and healthcare software, and Plustek offers Linux support for system integrators. Paper from 40 to 220 g/m2 covers thin forms through light card, and long documents up to 5080 mm can be scanned for receipts and printouts. At 2.7 kg and about 32 cm wide, it fits on a normal desk next to the PC. Nine customisable functions on the control panel let each common job run with a single press.

• 100 sheets in the feeder means most daily batches go in at once. That reduces how often you need to reload during a batch.
• Plustek rates it for 4,000 sheets per day, with separation roller life of 300,000 scans. Rollers are a consumable to budget for in heavy use.
• Paper from 40 to 220 g/m2, 30 business cards and plastic cards under 1.2 mm. Very heavy board and photos should go to a flatbed.
• Long paper up to 5080 mm handles receipts and long printouts.
• Nine customisable function buttons let you run saved scan profiles without opening software. Each button can be mapped to a destination or file type.

• No network or Wi-Fi; it needs a computer by USB. Share it through the connected PC, or choose the PN30U or eScan A450 Pro for networking.
• No flatbed and no A3. Choose an A3 flatbed for drawings and bound books.
• Colour at 300 dpi is slower than the headline speed. Choose greyscale or 200 dpi colour for maximum throughput.
• Linux support is for system integrators, not a consumer driver package. Windows and macOS users get full driver packages.
• Photos and fragile originals should not go through the feeder. Use a flatbed for photos and fragile pages.
