PNY Elite Steel 3.1 64 GB — Metal, Capless, 80 / 20 MB/s
64 GBUSB 3.1, Type-A80 MB/s read / 20 MB/s writeMetal, 53.3 x 17.6 x 7.2 mm
The PNY Elite Steel 3.1 is a 64 GB USB 3.1 flash drive in what PNY calls a durable and elegant metal housing. It measures 53.3 x 17.6 x 7.2 mm and is capless. PNY publishes read speeds of up to 80 MB/s and write speeds of up to 20 MB/s on a USB 3.1 port, and describes the drive as up to ten times faster than a standard USB 2.0 flash drive.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a USB Type-A drive with no USB-C connector and no adapter in the pack, so it will not enter a phone, a tablet or a USB-C-only laptop. PNY writes the interface simply as USB 3.1, backward compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, and does not state a Gen number. The published 80 / 20 is one figure for the whole Elite Steel range — PNY prints the identical pair at 32, 64, 128 and 256 GB rather than measuring each capacity — so read it as a family claim. Two things worth knowing before you compare it with a PNY Attaché. The Attaché 4 3.1 (part numbers like
FD64GATT431KK-EF) publishes the same 80 / 20 in a plastic body; the difference you are paying for here is the metal housing and a slimmer 7.2 mm profile, not speed. And the plain Attaché 4 without the “31KK” is USB 2.0 — PNY publishes no read figure for it at all and only a 3 MB/s write baseline. Miss those four characters and you order a drive several times slower. PNY publishes no weight, no keyring loop and no operating-system list for the Elite Steel, so none appear here.Best For
✓ Everyday transport of documents, photographs and installers
✓ Anyone who wants a metal body rather than plastic at this price
✓ Machines and laptops with USB-A ports
✓ A slim 7.2 mm drive that will not foul the neighbouring port
✓ Pockets and bags where a plastic stick would eventually crack
✓ Buyers who want a stated read and write pair rather than a bare bus rate
Key Features
Metal housing
PNY’s own description is a durable and elegant metal housing. It is the reason this drive costs more than the plastic Attaché that publishes the same speeds — you are buying the shell.
7.2 millimetres thick
Slim enough not to block the port next to it on a crowded laptop, and 53.3 mm long so there is still something to grip.
80 MB/s read, 20 MB/s write
Both published, which is more than many makers manage. Comfortable for documents and photographs; a large video will take its time on the write.
Capless
No cap to unscrew and none to lose. PNY does not describe a slider or a retractable mechanism for this model — the connector is simply exposed.

Singular Expert Insight
The Elite Steel is a case of paying for the object rather than the numbers, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do as long as you know it. PNY publishes exactly the same 80 / 20 for its plastic Attaché 4 3.1, so what the extra buys is a metal shell, a slimmer 7.2 mm profile and a drive that will still look presentable after a year on a keyring. Where PNY is thin is documentation: no weight, no colour, no OS list, no box contents, and a speed pair quoted once for four capacities. If you need per-capacity figures you can hold a manufacturer to, several makers in our USB flash drives range publish them. For large working files rather than carried ones, an external SSD is the right class of product.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want a slim metal 64 GB USB-A stick with a published read and write pair and a two-year term, and the build quality is worth the difference to you.
Skip it if
You want the cheapest drive at these speeds — the plastic Attaché 4 3.1 publishes the same 80 / 20. Or you need a USB-C connector.
Also consider
PNY Elite Steel 3.1 128 GB or 256 GB at the same published speeds. PNY Attaché 4 3.1 for the same 80 / 20 in plastic. Any USB-C drive if a phone is involved.
