The ICY BOX IB-2538StS from RaidSonic (article 60077) is a mounting frame that lets one 2.5-inch SATA hard disk or SSD occupy a 3.5-inch drive bay. It is a purely mechanical adapter: the drive’s own SATA data and power connectors are simply held in the position a 3.5-inch drive would put them, so the host sees the drive exactly as it is and the full SATA III rate of up to 6 Gbit/s is available. The specification that separates it from cheaper brackets is drive height — RaidSonic rates it for anything from 5 mm up to 15 mm, which covers thin consumer SSDs and thick enterprise 2.5-inch drives alike. A screw set is supplied, and the mounting threads are recessed brass rather than tapped plastic, so the frame survives being taken apart and reused.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a mechanical adapter, not an interface converter. It carries a 2.5-inch SATA drive into a 3.5-inch SATA bay; it will not make an M.2, U.2, SAS or IDE drive work in a SATA port, and it adds no controller of its own. Drive height must be between 5 mm and 15 mm — a 2.5-inch drive thicker than 15 mm is outside specification. Because the connectors end up where a 3.5-inch drive would put them, it also works in a 3.5-inch hot-swap backplane. Full speed, because nothing is in the way
There is no bridge chip and no re-wiring. The drive keeps its own 7-pin data and 15-pin power connectors and the frame only holds them in the 3.5-inch position, so the interface stays SATA III at up to 6 Gbit/s and the host reports the drive by its real model name. Hot-swap works exactly as it does for a bare drive.
Brass threads, not tapped plastic
The screw points are recessed brass inserts moulded into the body. Plastic threads strip after a few rebuilds; brass ones do not. That matters in a workshop or a test rig where the same frame is used over and over, and it is the reason this bracket costs a little more than the thinnest ones on the shelf.
