Samsung 870 EVO 500 GB — SATA SSD at the interface ceiling

560 / 530 MB/s300 TBW512 MB DRAM cacheTCG Opal 2.0

The MZ-77E500B/EU is Samsung’s 870 EVO at 500 GB — a 2.5-inch SATA III internal SSD reading at 560 MB/s and writing at 530 MB/s, which is effectively the ceiling of the SATA 6 Gb/s interface. It uses Samsung’s MKX controller, V-NAND 3-bit MLC (TLC) flash and 512 MB of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, is rated at 300 TBW, and is 6.8 mm thick so it fits any standard 2.5-inch bay.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things to know before you order.

1. Nothing is in the box but the drive. Samsung publishes “Installation Kit: Not Available” — no mounting bracket, no screws and no SATA cable. A desktop fitting usually needs a 2.5-to-3.5-inch bracket and a SATA data cable; a laptop replacement usually needs neither. Ask us and we will put the right parts in with it.

2. Only the endurance changes between capacities. Samsung publishes the same 560/530 MB/s, the same 98,000/88,000 IOPS, the same MKX controller and the same 512 MB of DRAM across the 250 GB and 500 GB. The one difference is TBW: 150 TB at 250 GB, 300 TB at 500 GB. So a larger drive buys you life as well as space — and it matters, because the warranty is capped by both.

On availability: Samsung has begun retiring the smallest capacity in this line — its UK pages mark the 250 GB as no longer available while the 500 GB remains current. If you want an 870 EVO, this is the size to buy.

Best For

✓ Upgrading an older laptop from a mechanical hard drive
✓ A boot and applications drive in a desktop with no M.2 slot
✓ Reviving a machine that is slow rather than short of storage
✓ A second drive in a system that has run out of NVMe slots

Key Features

560 / 530 MB/s — the SATA ceiling
SATA III tops out around 600 MB/s in theory and about 560 in practice, and this drive sits right at it. There is no faster SATA SSD to buy; for more you need an M.2 NVMe slot and a different drive entirely.

512 MB of DRAM cache — which cheap SSDs do not have
The 870 EVO carries a proper LPDDR4 DRAM buffer. Budget DRAM-less drives at similar prices slow down markedly under sustained work and as they fill. It is the single biggest quality difference in the SATA market and it never shows up in a headline speed figure.

300 TBW at this capacity — double the 250 GB
The endurance rating scales with size: 150 TB at 250 GB, 300 TB here. Since the warranty is limited by both five years and the TBW figure, buying up a capacity genuinely buys more warranty as well as more space.

Hardware encryption, properly specified
AES 256-bit (Class 0), TCG Opal 2.0 and IEEE 1667 — the last of which means Microsoft BitLocker eDrive support. A genuine business feature and rarely present on budget drives.

V-NAND 3-bit MLC — which means TLC
Samsung’s own term for three-bit-per-cell flash is “3-bit MLC”, which reads confusingly like the older two-bit MLC. It is TLC. Listings printing “MLC V-NAND” imply the more expensive two-bit type; it is not that.

Warranty
Warranty 1-Year Warranty (Singular)
Samsung Term 5 years or 300 TBW, whichever comes first. A dual limit, not a flat five years. Singular’s direct warranty is 1 year.
Not Published by Samsung
Sustained Write Speed Not published. Like all TLC drives the 870 EVO uses an SLC write cache; Samsung does not state what happens once that cache is exhausted on a long continuous write, nor the buffer size.
Other Omissions Exact NAND layer count, write amplification, DWPD and workload rating are not published.
Availability Current in Samsung’s EU range — unlike the 250 GB, which its UK pages now mark as no longer available. Samsung appears to be retiring the smallest capacity first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 500 GB faster than the 250 GB?
No. Samsung publishes the same 560 MB/s read, 530 MB/s write and the same IOPS across both. What is higher at 500 GB is the endurance rating — 300 TBW against 150 — and since the warranty is capped by TBW as well as years, that is a real benefit rather than a paper one.
Does it come with mounting screws or a SATA cable?
No. Samsung states plainly that no installation kit is included — the box contains the drive. A desktop fitting usually needs a 2.5-to-3.5-inch bracket and a SATA data cable; tell us and we will supply them with it.
What is the difference between the 870 EVO and the 870 QVO?
The flash. The EVO uses 3-bit TLC V-NAND; the QVO uses 4-bit QLC. Both quote the same 560/530 headline, but the QVO has lower endurance and slows down considerably on long writes once its cache fills. The QVO also starts at 1 TB. For a boot drive, the EVO is the one to have.
Will it fit my laptop?
If the laptop takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive, yes — at 6.8 mm it fits both 7 mm and 9.5 mm bays. It will not fit an M.2 slot; that is a completely different form factor.
What does “5 years or 300 TBW” actually mean?
The warranty ends at whichever limit you reach first. 300 TB of writes is a great deal — normal desktop or laptop use might manage 10 to 20 TB in five years — so in practice the five years is your real limit unless the drive is doing something unusually write-heavy.
Is it TLC or MLC?
TLC. Samsung calls it “3-bit MLC”, which is its own naming for three bits per cell. Listings that print just “MLC” imply the older, more expensive two-bit type, which this is not.
Singular Expert Insight
A SATA SSD in 2026 is a specific purchase rather than a default one: if your machine has a free M.2 NVMe slot, an NVMe drive will be several times faster for similar money. Where the 870 EVO still makes complete sense is the older laptop or desktop with no M.2 slot at all, and there the upgrade from a mechanical hard drive remains the single most noticeable thing you can do to a computer. What separates it from the cheap SATA drives beside it is the DRAM cache and the endurance rating rather than the headline speed — every SATA SSD claims about 560 MB/s, because that is the interface, not the drive. Two practical notes: budget for a bracket and cable, since the box has neither; and at 500 GB you are in the sweet spot of this line, with double the 250 GB’s endurance and no availability question hanging over it. Browse our internal SSD range, or drive enclosures if you want to reuse the drive you are replacing.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You are upgrading a laptop or desktop with no M.2 NVMe slot, and you want real DRAM cache, hardware encryption and a proper endurance rating.

Skip it if

Your machine has a free M.2 NVMe slot — an NVMe drive is several times faster for similar money — or you need more than 500 GB.

Also consider

A 1 TB or larger 870 EVO for more capacity and endurance, an NVMe M.2 drive if your machine supports one, or a USB enclosure to reuse the drive you are taking out.
