Samsung 9100 PRO 1 TB — PCIe 5.0, roughly double Gen 4
14,700 / 13,300 MB/sPCIe 5.0 ×41 GB LPDDR4X600 TBW
The MZ-VAP1T0BW is Samsung’s 9100 PRO at 1 TB — the flagship that replaced the 990 PRO. It is an M.2 2280 drive on PCIe 5.0 ×4 with NVMe 2.0, reading at 14,700 MB/s and writing at 13,300 MB/s: almost exactly double the Gen 4 generation. It carries 1 GB of LPDDR4X DRAM, is rated at 600 TBW, and this part number is the bare drive — 2.38 mm thick, no heatsink.
Compatibility — check before buying:
⚠️ You need a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot to get anything out of this drive.
On a PCIe 4.0 board it will work perfectly — and run at roughly 7,000 MB/s, which is 990 PRO speed for 9100 PRO money. Check your motherboard: only the CPU-attached M.2 slot on recent AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1700/1851 boards is Gen 5, and many boards have exactly one. Chipset-attached slots are usually Gen 4.
⚠️ Two 1 TB part numbers, and they are not the same product. MZ-VAP1T0BW (this one) is the bare drive. MZ-VAP1T0CW is the heatsink version, sold on Samsung’s UK, IE and German sites among others. Identical performance and endurance — the difference is cooling and physical fit.
⚠️ PlayStation 5: Samsung makes the claim only for the heatsink version. Samsung’s UK page for MZ-VAP1T0CW states that the 8.8 mm heatsink fits laptop, desktop and PlayStation 5. Samsung makes no PS5 statement at all on this bare part number, and the PS5 requires a heatsink this box does not contain. If the drive is for a console, buy the CW version. (A PS5 is a Gen 4 machine in any case — a Gen 4 drive is the smarter buy there.)
⚠️ Cooling matters more at Gen 5. This drive draws 7.6 W reading and 7.2 W writing, against 5.4 W and 5.0 W for the 990 PRO. Samsung recommends proper airflow. If your motherboard has no M.2 heatsink over the Gen 5 slot, buy the CW version instead of this one.

Best For
✓ A current AM5 or LGA1700/1851 desktop with a free PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot
✓ Very large file transfers, 8K video, AI datasets, fast game asset streaming
✓ A build where the motherboard already provides an M.2 heatsink
✓ Anyone who wants headroom rather than the cheapest fast drive
Key Features
14,700 / 13,300 MB/s — roughly double Gen 4
Samsung’s own datasheet figure for the 1 TB. Note that Samsung’s US site headlines 14,800 / 13,400 — that is the line-wide marketing number for the larger capacities. The datasheet and every EU page give 14,700 / 13,300 at 1 TB, and that is what we publish.
1 GB of LPDDR4X DRAM
A step up from the 990 PRO’s LPDDR4, and the reason this drive holds performance when it is nearly full or under sustained load, where DRAM-less drives sag.
600 TBW, dual-limited warranty
Samsung warrants it for 5 years or 600 TBW, whichever comes first. Note that the endurance is the same 600 TB as the Gen 4 990 PRO at this capacity — you are buying speed, not extra life.
Full hardware encryption
AES 256-bit full disk encryption, TCG Opal 2.0 and IEEE 1667 for Microsoft BitLocker eDrive.
⚠️ Bare drive — no heatsink, no installation kit
Samsung publishes “Installation Kit: Not Available”. The box holds the SSD and a warranty statement. No screw, no heatsink, no bracket.

Singular Expert Insight
The 9100 PRO is a straightforward proposition: it is the 990 PRO on a Gen 5 bus. Same 1 GB of DRAM, same 600 TBW at 1 TB, same in-house controller with no published name — but roughly double the sequential throughput and, unavoidably, about 40 % more power draw. That last point is the practical one. At 7.6 W under read this drive runs hot, Samsung names no thermal technology for it, and this bare part number ships without a heatsink. If your motherboard’s Gen 5 slot has its own heatsink you are fine; if it does not, buy the MZ-VAP1T0CW version rather than adding a random cooler. And be honest about whether you need Gen 5 at all: outside very large sequential transfers, an everyday desktop will feel no different from a good Gen 4 drive, because at everyday queue depths both are far faster than the workload. Buy it for a Gen 5 board and real throughput work. Browse our internal SSD range.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
Your motherboard has a free PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot with its own heatsink, and you move large files often enough for 14,700 MB/s to be real rather than theoretical.
Skip it if
Your board is PCIe 4.0 (the 990 PRO does the same job for less), the Gen 5 slot has no heatsink (buy MZ-VAP1T0CW), or the drive is for a PlayStation 5.
Also consider
MZ-VAP1T0CW, the same drive with the heatsink, for a bare motherboard slot or a console. The 990 PRO if your board is Gen 4. Larger capacities go to 8 TB.
