Samsung BAR Plus 512 GB — 400 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write over USB-A 3.2 Gen 1
512 GB400 / 110 MB/sUSB-A 3.2 Gen 1Metal body
The MUF-512BE4/APC is Samsung’s BAR Plus USB Flash Drive at 512 GB in titanium grey. Samsung rates it at 400 MB/s sequential read and 110 MB/s write at this capacity, over a standard USB Type-A connector. BAR Plus is the metal-bodied drive in Samsung’s range, built around a solid casing with a keyring loop rather than a plastic shell. It measures 40.05 × 15.46 × 12.02 mm and weighs about 10.9 g.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Three notes on the published figures, because all three are misread regularly.
1. The write speed. Samsung’s regional product pages quote read speed only and say write is “lower than read speed”. The 110 MB/s figure comes from Samsung’s own launch announcement for the 512 GB drives, which states 400 MB/s read and 110 MB/s write across the BAR Plus, FIT Plus and Type-C lines. We publish it and tell you where it comes from.
2. The temperature. Samsung’s pages show −25 to 85 °C, but that is the temperature-proof survival claim, not an operating range. The actual operating range is 0 to 60 °C. Listings that print −25 to 85 as the operating spec have confused the two.
3. USB 3.1 versus 3.2 Gen 1. Samsung’s own page URLs still say “usb-3-1” while the specification table says USB 3.2 Gen 1. These are the same 5 Gbps standard under two names — the USB-IF renamed it. Neither label is wrong; we use the current one.

Best For
✓ Carrying a large working set between machines
✓ A drive that lives on a keyring and takes abuse
✓ Backing up a photo or video library off a laptop
✓ Anyone who has broken a plastic flash drive before
Key Features
400 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write
Fast enough that moving a large video file off the drive takes seconds rather than minutes. The write figure comes from Samsung’s own 512 GB launch release — the product pages omit it, which is why so many listings show no write speed at all.
A metal body, and that is the point
The whole argument for BAR Plus over a cheaper drive is the casing. Solid metal with an integrated keyring loop, rated to 1,500 G of shock — a plastic drive on a keyring in a pocket does not survive long, and at 512 GB there is rather more on it to lose.
512 GB is capacity, not extra speed
Worth being straight about: Samsung publishes the same 400 / 110 MB/s at 256 GB and 512 GB. The step up from 128 GB is where the write speed nearly doubles; beyond 256 GB you are buying room, not pace.
Five-proof, on Samsung’s own tests
Water to 1 m for 72 hours in saltwater, shock to 1,500 G, magnetism to 15,000 gauss, airport X-ray to 100 mGy, and a temperature survival claim from −25 to 85 °C. Samsung cites no external standard for any of these.
Five-year manufacturer term
Samsung warrants this line for five years — longer than most flash drives on the shelf, and a reasonable proxy for how it expects the metal casing to hold up.

Singular Expert Insight
At 512 GB the three Samsung flash drive lines — BAR Plus, FIT Plus and the Type-C drive — are the same drive inside: 400 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write, the same five-proof claims, the same five-year term. Choose entirely on shape and connector. BAR Plus is the one to buy if the drive travels: metal body, keyring loop, and enough mass that you notice it in a pocket rather than putting it through the wash. One practical point at this capacity — 512 GB is enough to hold something you would genuinely miss, so the metal casing and the five-year warranty stop being a nicety. Browse the rest of our USB flash drives, or our SD and microSD cards if the storage is going into a camera or a phone.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want a large, fast drive that survives being carried — metal body, keyring loop, five-year manufacturer term.
Skip it if
The drive will live permanently plugged into a laptop or car (FIT Plus is the better shape), or your machine has only USB-C ports.
Also consider
FIT Plus at the same speed in a much smaller body, the Type-C version if you need USB-C, or the 256 GB BAR Plus at the same speed for less.
