Samsung Galaxy A17 5G — 5G, OIS and six years of updates
6.7″ Super AMOLED 90 Hz50 MP with OIS5G Sub66 OS upgrades
The SM-A176BZKAEUB is Samsung’s Galaxy A17 5G in black, with 128 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM. It has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 1080 × 2340 running at 90 Hz, a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 5,000 mAh battery, IP54 and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Samsung commits to six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, published as running to 31 August 2031.
Compatibility — check before buying:
⭐ A17 5G or A17 4G? Read this before you assume the 5G is simply the better phone — it is not.
The two are the same size, the same weight to within 2 g, the same screen, the same 50 MP OIS camera, the same 5,000 mAh battery, the same IP54 rating and the same six-year update promise. Only four published things differ, and three of them favour the cheaper 4G:
• 5G — the 5G model’s one clear advantage, plus a marginally faster CPU (2.4 GHz against 2.2 GHz).
• ???? NFC. The 4G lists NFC; the 5G has no NFC row on any of Samsung’s European pages — UK, UK business, Ireland or Greece. That means no tap-to-pay. This is the single most consequential difference and the one most listings get wrong.
• Glass. The 4G has Gorilla Glass Victus+; this 5G has plain Victus. The cheaper phone has the tougher front.
• Security support runs to 31 August 2031 here against 30 September 2031 on the 4G — one month less.
So the honest steer: buy the 5G if you need 5G. If you do not, the 4G is cheaper, has tap-to-pay, tougher glass and 2 g less to carry.
⚠️ Samsung does not publish the chipset in its specification table — only “Octa-Core, 2.4 GHz + 2.0 GHz”. Its UK Newsroom names the Exynos 1330, which is a Samsung source but not a specification-table entry, so we report it as such.
⚠️ Charging: the specification table publishes only a charger requirement of 10–25 W USB Power Delivery. “25 W fast charging” appears in the Newsroom only. The charger is sold separately.
⚠️ Other absences worth naming: the SIM tray is hybrid (second SIM or microSD, not both), the speakers are mono (Samsung publishes “Stereo Support: No”), Wi-Fi is Wi-Fi 5 not Wi-Fi 6, video tops out at Full HD 30 fps with no 4K, and there is no headphone jack.

Best For
✓ Anyone who needs 5G on a budget
✓ Photos and video in low light — the stabilised camera is the draw
✓ Keeping a phone for five or six years
✓ A large AMOLED screen without mid-range prices
Key Features
5G, and that is the reason to choose it over the 4G
Sub-6 5G on both FDD and TDD bands, plus a slightly faster CPU. Everything else about the two phones is the same or better on the 4G, so be clear with yourself about whether you need 5G before paying the difference.
Optical image stabilisation on the 50 MP camera
Steadier handheld shots after dark and video that does not wobble as you walk. Both A17 models have it; the A16 below them does not, which is the bigger jump in photo quality.
Six years of security updates
Samsung publishes six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security maintenance, running to 31 August 2031. A phone you can safely keep for most of a decade costs far less per year than a better one replaced after three.
???? No NFC — and we will say so plainly
Samsung publishes no NFC row for the A17 5G on any of its European pages, while the 4G model explicitly lists it. That means no tap-to-pay. Listings advertising NFC on this part number are wrong, and it is the most common error we see on it.
Gorilla Glass Victus — note, not Victus+
The 4G model has Victus+; this one has plain Victus. Still meaningful scratch protection, but it is the one place where the more expensive phone has the weaker specification.

Singular Expert Insight
This is one of the rare cases where the cheaper model in a pair is arguably the better phone. The A17 4G and the A17 5G share the screen, the stabilised 50 MP camera, the battery, the build and the six-year update promise — and the 4G additionally has NFC for tap-to-pay, tougher Gorilla Glass Victus+, two grams less weight and a month more security support. The 5G gives you 5G and a marginally faster processor, and that is the whole list. So the question is genuinely simple: do you need 5G? If your network and your usage make it worth having, this is a good phone at a fair price. If not, we would point you at the 4G and let you keep the difference. Browse our mobile phones range, or phone cases to go with it.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You need 5G, you want a large AMOLED screen and a stabilised camera, and you intend to keep the phone for years.
Skip it if
You do not specifically need 5G — the A17 4G is cheaper and adds NFC and tougher glass — or you rely on contactless payments from your phone.
Also consider
The Galaxy A17 4G, which adds NFC and Gorilla Glass Victus+ for less, or the Galaxy A16 if the budget is tighter and you can live without OIS.
