Samsung Galaxy Watch8 40 mm — 3,000 nits, sapphire, dual-frequency GPS

1.34″ AMOLED, 3,000 nitsSapphire crystal5ATM + IP68 + MIL-STD-810HWear OS 6

The SM-L320NDAAEUE is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 in the 40 mm size, Bluetooth, in graphite. It has a 1.34-inch Super AMOLED display at 438 × 438 reaching 3,000 nits under sapphire crystal, a five-core 3 nm Exynos W1000, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, a 325 mAh battery and its own dual-frequency GPS. It runs Wear OS 6 with One UI 8 Watch, weighs 30 g without the band, and carries 5ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings.

Compatibility — check before buying:
???? Read this first if you own a Galaxy Watch already: the band fitting has changed. The Watch8 introduces Samsung’s Dynamic Lug System and drops the universal 20 mm quick-release spring bar used since the Watch4. No Watch7 strap and no third-party 20 mm strap will fit. Samsung publishes no page explaining the change — its user guide simply describes pressing the band into the lug — so it catches people out. If you were planning to reuse straps, this is the single most important thing on this page.

Watch8 or Watch7? The genuine changes are: a slightly larger 1.34-inch display at 438 × 438 (up from 1.3″ and 432 × 432), 3,000 nits against 2,000, a cushion-shaped case rather than square (40.4 × 42.7 × 8.6 mm — thinner but no longer symmetrical), a 325 mAh battery, Wear OS 6 with One UI 8 Watch, and new health features. What has not changed: the same Exynos W1000 chipset, the same 2 GB / 32 GB, and — despite the larger battery — the same published battery life of 40 hours with the always-on display off and 30 with it on. It is also 1.2 g heavier.

Health features — and how they are gated. This matters more than the specifications.

• The new Watch8 features — Antioxidant Index, Vascular Load, Bedtime Guidance and Running Coach — run in Samsung Health, which works on any Android 10 or 11 phone. They do not require a Samsung phone.
• But ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea run in Samsung Health Monitor, which Samsung publishes as available only on Samsung Galaxy smartphones (Android 12 or later). On a Pixel or a Xiaomi the watch works well and those three do not.
• ✅ ECG and blood pressure are available in our market — Samsung’s Greek Samsung Health Monitor page confirms it.
• ???? Irregular heart rhythm notification (IHRN): Samsung Greece published an explicit exclusion for the Watch7. For the Watch8 we could not retrieve the equivalent footnote, and silence is not confirmation. We therefore do not list IHRN as a feature. Ask us if it is decisive for you and we will check the live Greek page with you.

Compatibility: Android 12 or higher with at least 1.5 GB of memory, and a phone with Google Mobile Services. There is no iOS support.

⚠️ Galaxy AI: Samsung features Gemini on the Watch8 but publishes no Greek-language support statement for the watch either way. We make no Greek-language AI claim.

Best For

✓ Anyone on an Android phone who wants a full smartwatch rather than a tracker
✓ Running and cycling — dual-frequency GPS works without the phone
✓ Outdoors in bright sun, where 3,000 nits is genuinely useful
✓ Samsung Galaxy phone owners who want ECG and body composition

Key Features

3,000 nits and sapphire crystal
Half as bright again as the Watch7, which is exactly the difference between readable and guessable in direct Cyprus sun. Sapphire is far harder to scratch than ordinary glass.

Dual-frequency GPS, onboard
GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo with L1 and L5 dual-frequency reception — noticeably more accurate among buildings and trees, and it works without the phone. Samsung’s Fit trackers borrow the phone’s GPS; this does not.

New health measurements that do not need a Samsung phone
Antioxidant Index (a carotenoid reading from your thumb on the sensor), Vascular Load, Bedtime Guidance and Running Coach are new to the Watch8 and run in Samsung Health, which works on any Android 10 or 11 phone. Vascular Load needs at least three nights of wear in the previous fortnight.

Three durability ratings, all carried over
5ATM for water pressure, IP68 for dust and water ingress, and MIL-STD-810H. All three are published for the Watch8, as they were for the Watch7.

???? New band fitting — old straps will not fit
The Dynamic Lug System replaces the universal 20 mm spring bar. Watch7 straps and generic 20 mm bands do not fit the Watch8. Samsung has published nothing explaining the change, so we are flagging it here rather than letting you discover it.

Colour Range (40 mm) Silver and Graphite only — there is no third option at this size

Display & Build
Display 1.34″ Super AMOLED, 438 × 438

Case Shape Cushion — no longer square. 40.4 × 42.7 × 8.6 mm, thinner than the Watch7’s 9.7 mm.
Weight 30.0 g without the band
Case Material Not published in Samsung’s specification tables. Some regional marketing describes “Armor Aluminium”; we do not state it as a specification.
Band Sport band, size S/M included. ???? Dynamic Lug System — proprietary. The Watch7’s 20 mm universal quick-release bands do not fit. Samsung publishes no wrist-size range in millimetres for the Watch8, so the Watch7’s 130–190 mm figure cannot be carried over.
Durability

Battery 325 mAh — up from the Watch7’s 300 mAh

Health Features
New on the Watch8 Antioxidant Index, Vascular Load, Bedtime Guidance and Running Coach — all run in Samsung Health and work with any Android 10 or 11 phone.
Requirements for the New Features Vascular Load and Running Coach require Samsung Health 6.30.2 or later and a Samsung account; Vascular Load also needs at least three nights of wear in the previous 14 days.
ECG and Blood Pressure Run in Samsung Health Monitor, which Samsung publishes as available only on Samsung Galaxy smartphones (Android 12+). ✅ Both are available in our market.
Sleep Apnea Detection Also Samsung Health Monitor, so also Galaxy-phone-only.
Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification ???? Not listed by us. Samsung Greece published an explicit exclusion for the Watch7 and we could not retrieve the equivalent footnote for the Watch8. We treat the absence of confirmation as a reason to omit the feature rather than to claim it.
Sensors Optical heart rate, electrical heart (ECG), bioelectrical impedance (BIA), infrared temperature, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic, light
Software & Compatibility
Operating System Wear OS 6 with One UI 8 Watch
Phone Requirement Android 12 or higher with at least 1.5 GB of memory, and Google Mobile Services
iOS / iPhone Not supported.
Software Support Samsung publishes no per-model support end date for the Watch8. Its five-year wearable commitment announced in 2026 is documented for the Watch9 and Watch Ultra 2, with no mention of the Watch8. We state nothing rather than guess.
Warranty
Warranty 1-Year Warranty (Singular)
Manufacturer Term Samsung’s UK schedule lists Galaxy Watch at 24 months. That is a UK commitment rather than a published Samsung Cyprus term. Singular’s direct warranty is 1 year, and your statutory rights under Cyprus law apply separately.
Not Published by Samsung
Omitted Specifications Box contents (absent from every regional page and from the user guide), charging time, case material, band wrist-size range in millimetres, the included band’s colour, and any Watch8 software-support end date.
A Note on Third-Party Claims Common errors on this model: selling Watch7 or generic 20 mm straps as compatible (they are not — this is the most damaging one); quoting 2,000 nits or a 432 × 432 resolution, both Watch7 figures; claiming a new or faster chipset (it is the same Exynos W1000); and listing IHRN as a feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Galaxy Watch7 straps fit?
???? No. The Watch8 uses Samsung’s new Dynamic Lug System and has dropped the universal 20 mm quick-release spring bar used since the Watch4. Watch7 straps and third-party 20 mm bands will not fit. Samsung has published nothing explaining the change, which is why so many people are caught out.
Is the Watch8 much better than the Watch7?
Better in specific ways rather than across the board. It gains a slightly larger and much brighter screen (3,000 nits against 2,000), a thinner cushion-shaped case, Wear OS 6, and four new health measurements. It keeps the same Exynos W1000 chipset, the same memory and — despite a larger battery — the same published 40-hour battery life. If you own a Watch7, the screen and the new health features are the reasons to move; nothing else is.
Does it work with an iPhone?
No. Samsung requires an Android phone running Android 12 or higher with at least 1.5 GB of memory. There is no iOS support.
Does it have to be a Samsung phone?
For the watch and its new health features — Antioxidant Index, Vascular Load, Bedtime Guidance, Running Coach — no, any Android 10 or 11 phone works, because those run in Samsung Health. For ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea, yes: those run in Samsung Health Monitor, which Samsung publishes as Galaxy-phone-only.
Can I use ECG in Cyprus?
Yes — ECG and blood pressure are available in our market, confirmed on Samsung’s Greek Samsung Health Monitor page. You will need a Samsung Galaxy phone on Android 12 or later.
Does it detect irregular heart rhythm?
We do not list that feature. Samsung Greece published an explicit exclusion for the Watch7, and we could not retrieve the equivalent footnote for the Watch8 — so rather than assume it has been added, we leave it out. Ask us if it is decisive and we will check the live page with you.
Is this the LTE model?
No. SM-L320 is the 40 mm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi model. The 40 mm LTE version is SM-L325F. It does have its own GPS, so runs and rides are tracked without the phone either way.
How long does it take to charge?
Samsung does not publish a charging time, so we will not quote one. What it does publish is battery life: up to 40 hours with the always-on display off, 30 with it on.
Singular Expert Insight
The Watch8 is a screen-and-software upgrade rather than a hardware generation. The 3,000-nit display is the change you notice daily, especially outdoors here, and the thinner cushion case wears better than the Watch7’s slab. But the chipset is unchanged, the memory is unchanged, and the battery life is identical despite a larger cell — so if you are hoping for a longer-lasting watch, this is not it. Two things to be clear-eyed about before ordering. The band fitting has changed, so any strap collection you own is now obsolete; that is the most common and most annoying surprise on this model. And the headline health features split two ways: the new Watch8 measurements work on any Android phone, but ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea still require a Samsung Galaxy phone. If you are on a Pixel, buy it for the GPS, the screen and the build, and treat the medical suite as unavailable. Browse our mobile phones if the phone is the next question, or mobile phone accessories.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You use an Android phone — ideally a Samsung Galaxy — and want a bright, well-built smartwatch with onboard dual-frequency GPS and the newest health measurements.

Skip it if

You use an iPhone (unsupported), you own Watch7 straps you were hoping to reuse (they will not fit), or you want a fortnight of battery rather than a day or two.

Also consider

The 44 mm Galaxy Watch8 if you have a larger wrist, the LTE version (SM-L325F), or the Galaxy Watch7 as run-out stock if the brighter screen and new health features are not worth the difference.
