Samsung P9 Express 256 GB — a microSD card that runs on PCIe, not UHS-I

800 MB/s in Express modePCIe Gen 3 ×1 / NVMeNintendo Switch 2Class 10 / U3 / V30 / A1

The MB-MK256T is Samsung’s P9 Express — a microSD Express card, which is a different thing from every other microSD on this site. Instead of the UHS-I bus, it runs PCIe Gen 3 ×1 with NVMe 1.3 inside the microSD shape, reaching 800 MB/s sequential read in a host that supports it. It is the card type the Nintendo Switch 2 requires, and Samsung names that console directly. Available in 256 GB and 512 GB.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Read this before you buy — the card behaves as two different products depending on the device. In a microSD Express host (Nintendo Switch 2, and Express-capable readers) it runs on PCIe and reaches 800 MB/s. In an ordinary microSDXC slot — almost every phone, camera, drone and laptop — it falls back to legacy UHS-I mode at 90 MB/s. Samsung publishes both figures side by side and states plainly that “transfer speeds may be limited to UHS-I speeds depending on the host device’s compatibility”. The card is compatible with normal slots; it just is not fast in them. If your device is not an Express host, a T7 or PRO Plus card will be faster than this one and cheaper.

Best For

✓ Nintendo Switch 2 game storage
✓ An Express-capable card reader on a workstation
✓ Anyone who wants headroom for future Express devices
✓ Large game installs that load from the card

Key Features

PCIe and NVMe in a microSD shell
microSD Express is not a faster UHS-I — it is a different interface. This card carries PCIe Gen 3 ×1, NVMe 1.3 and SD 7.1, alongside legacy UHS-I for compatibility. That is why it reaches 800 MB/s where a UHS-I card physically cannot exceed about 104.

Samsung names the Nintendo Switch 2
Directly, on its own product pages. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express, and an ordinary microSD card — however fast — will not work for game storage on it. That single fact is the main reason this product exists.

Random performance, published for once
Unusually, Samsung publishes a full IOPS table. In Express mode: 65K read / 52K write random 4K at QD32. In UHS-I fallback: 2K. Random performance is what determines game load times, and the gap between the two modes is far larger than the sequential figures suggest.

U3 and V30 — which describe the fallback, not the Express mode
A card doing 800 MB/s carrying the same V30 mark as a 90 MB/s one looks like an error. It is not: the UHS speed classes apply to the legacy UHS-I path. Samsung makes this readable by tabulating the two modes separately. Note it is U3, not U1 — several listings, including our own previous one, had that wrong.

A narrower temperature range than any UHS-I card
Samsung rates it for 0 °C to 45 °C operating, where its UHS-I cards run from −25 to 85 °C. Worth knowing in a Cyprus summer: this is not a card to leave in a parked car or use in an outdoor camera.

Sequential Read 800 MB/s
Sequential Write Not published by Samsung — no write row appears on any regional page or in the datasheet. We will not print a figure Samsung withholds.
Random Read 4K QD32 65,000 IOPS
Random Write 4K QD32 52,000 IOPS
Random Read 4K QD1 9,000 IOPS
Random Write 4K QD1 30,000 IOPS

When This Applies Any host without microSD Express support — which is almost every phone, camera, drone and laptop card slot in use today
Speed Classes
Speed Class Class 10
UHS Speed Class U3 (not U1 — a common listing error)
Video Speed Class V30
Application Performance Class A1
What These Describe The legacy UHS-I mode. The SD Association’s speed classes predate Express and do not describe PCIe performance.
Durability & Physical
Dimensions 15 × 11 × 1 mm on Samsung’s product page; the datasheet states 1.1 mm. Both are Samsung figures; we publish both.
Weight Approx. 0.25 g
Operating Temperature 0 °C to 45 °C — far narrower than Samsung’s UHS-I cards. Non-operating −40 to 85 °C.
Water Up to 1 m for 72 hours in 3% saltwater at 25 °C
Drop Up to 1 m, 10 cycles — note this is lower than the 5 m Samsung claims for its UHS-I cards
X-ray / Magnetism Up to 100 mGy / up to 15,000 gauss
Wear 10,000 insertion cycles
Power Only figure Samsung publishes is 800 mA maximum in SDR104 mode. No active or idle power is given for Express mode.
Warranty
Warranty 1-Year Warranty (Singular)
Samsung Term 3-year limited warranty — the same term as the T7 and T9 lines, not the 10 years of the outgoing consumer cards.
Important Exclusion Samsung’s warranty does not cover dashcam, CCTV, surveillance or other write-intensive continuous-recording use. For those, PRO Endurance is the correct product.
Not Published by Samsung
Sequential Write Absent from every page and from the datasheet.
Box Contents Not published — no adapter is stated either way.
Other Omissions TBW / endurance, MTBF, active and idle power, operating voltage. Note that Samsung does publish NAND type and controller here, which it does not do for its UHS-I lines.
Naming Press coverage describes Samsung consolidating into a T-series for UHS-I and a P-series for PCIe/Express. That is a reasonable reading of the naming, but Samsung has not stated it — treat it as inference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work in my phone or camera?
It will fit and it will work, but at 90 MB/s, because those devices have no microSD Express support and the card falls back to legacy UHS-I. For a phone or camera, a T7 or PRO Plus card is genuinely faster and cheaper. Only buy this if your device supports Express.
Do I need it for the Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes, if you want to expand game storage. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express and will not accept an ordinary microSD card for game storage, no matter how fast that card is rated. Samsung names the Switch 2 on its own pages for this product.
Why does an 800 MB/s card only carry a V30 mark?
Because the SD Association’s speed classes describe the legacy UHS-I path, which predates Express. Samsung publishes the two modes as separate columns, which is the clearest way to read it. The V30 and U3 marks tell you about the fallback, not the PCIe performance.
Is it U1 or U3?
U3. Samsung’s UK and Swiss pages and the official datasheet all say U3. Several retail listings — and our own earlier record — showed U1; that was wrong and is corrected here.
What is the write speed?
Samsung does not publish one, anywhere. Not on the product pages, not in the datasheet. We would rather leave the row honest than fill it from a reseller listing.
Can I use it in a dashcam?
No — and not only because of the warranty exclusion. The 0 to 45 °C operating range makes it unsuitable for a car in a Cyprus summer. Use PRO Endurance for anything that records unattended.
Singular Expert Insight
microSD Express is the first genuinely new thing to happen to memory cards in years, and it is worth understanding before you spend on one. The card has two personalities: PCIe at 800 MB/s in a host that speaks Express, and legacy UHS-I at 90 MB/s in everything else — which means that in your phone, this premium card is slower than the mid-range T7 sitting next to it on the shelf. Right now the Nintendo Switch 2 is the mainstream device that needs it, and if that is why you are here, this is the correct purchase and there is no substitute. If you are buying it as a general-purpose card to future-proof, be honest with yourself about whether you own anything that can use it. Two smaller cautions we would not want you to miss: the drop rating is 1 m rather than the 5 m of Samsung’s UHS-I cards, and the operating range stops at 45 °C. Browse our SD and microSD card range, or an Express-capable card reader if you want the full speed on a laptop.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You have a Nintendo Switch 2, or another microSD Express host, and you want the speed the interface was designed for.

Skip it if

Your device has an ordinary microSD slot — you will get 90 MB/s and a cheaper T7 or PRO Plus card will beat it. Also skip it for dashcams, outdoor cameras and anything left in a hot car.

Also consider

T9 at 200 MB/s or T7 at 170 MB/s for phones, cameras and older consoles; PRO Endurance for recorders; or the 512 GB P9 Express if 256 GB is not enough for a game library.
