Samsung T7 Shield 1 TB — rugged portable SSD, 1,050 MB/s over USB-C

1,050 / 1,000 MB/sIP65 rated3 m drop98 g

The MU-PE1T0R/EU is Samsung’s T7 Shield portable SSD at 1 TB in blue — the rugged version of the T7, wrapped in a grippy rubber shell and rated IP65 for dust and water. It reads at 1,050 MB/s and writes at 1,000 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) via USB-C, carries AES 256-bit hardware encryption, and weighs 98 g at 59 × 88 × 13 mm. Both a USB-C to C and a USB-C to A cable are in the box.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Three products share the T7 name and they are not the same thing.

• T7 Shield (MU-PE…) — this one. Rubberised, IP65, 3 m drop rating.
• T7 (MU-PC…) — aluminium, no IP rating, 2 m shock rating only.
• T7 Touch — the T7 with a fingerprint reader.

And separately, Samsung sells a T7 microSD card (MB-MB…) which is an entirely different product class. If a listing shows IP65 on a plain T7, it is wrong — only the Shield has it.

Colour code: in this line R = blue, S = black, K = Moonrock Beige. The 4 TB capacity is black only.

Compatibility. Samsung publishes Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.10 or later and Android 5.1 or later, and describes it loosely as connecting to “Macs, PCs, Android devices, gaming consoles and more”. It publishes no device compatibility list — iPads, televisions and specific consoles such as the PS5 or Xbox are not named anywhere in its documentation, and its manual says only that compatibility with host devices may vary. We will not promise them.

Best For

✓ Working off an external drive on location, in weather
✓ Backing up a photo or video library that leaves the house
✓ Editing directly from the drive rather than copying first
✓ Anyone who has already killed a portable drive by dropping it

Key Features

1,050 / 1,000 MB/s — not far off an internal drive
Roughly twice what a SATA SSD manages and many times a mechanical portable drive. At 1 TB, that is the difference between waiting on a transfer and simply working from the drive.

The rubber shell is the whole point
The Shield trades the plain T7’s aluminium body for a moulded rubber exterior. That buys IP65 and a 3 m drop rating — and, per Samsung, better heat control on long transfers. If the drive never leaves a desk, the cheaper plain T7 is the same speed.

Sustained write — Samsung’s own claim, with its own caveat
Samsung states the drive maintains above 900 MB/s sequential write on the 1 TB model at 25 °C, and that there is no performance degradation moving very large sets at once, crediting a “Dynamic Thermal Guard”. Note the 1 TB is explicitly the lower-sustaining capacity (the 2 TB holds 1,000 MB/s), and this figure appears on the product page and press release but not in the datasheet. No test duration or host configuration is given.

Hardware AES 256-bit, with optional password
Encryption is hardware-based. Password protection is optional and set up through Samsung’s Portable SSD Software (Windows, macOS, Android). One warning worth reading before you enable it: if you forget the password, recovery is a factory reset through Samsung support, and the data is gone.

Both cables in the box
USB-C to C and USB-C to A are supplied, so it works with a modern laptop and an older desktop without a separate purchase. Pre-formatted exFAT, so it mounts on Windows and macOS out of the box.

Durability
Ingress Protection IP65. Samsung’s datasheet qualifies it: “This device has an IP65 rating based on internal testing conducted under controlled conditions.” Its press release uses the stronger word “certified”. No certification body or test house is named, so we publish the datasheet’s qualified wording.
Drop Up to 3 m — Samsung’s test: free fall to a metal plate from 3 m. No standard is cited; this is not a MIL-STD-810 rating.
Shock (non-operating) 1,500 G, 0.5 ms, three axes
Operating Temperature 0 °C to 60 °C; non-operating −40 °C to 85 °C
Security & Software
Encryption AES 256-bit, hardware-based
Password Protection Optional. Samsung: “Security mode is optional. You may use the T7 Shield without enabling the security/update feature.” Requires Samsung Portable SSD Software 1.0 (Windows, macOS, Android).
If You Forget the Password Recovery is a factory reset through Samsung customer service. The data is lost. Worth knowing before you enable it.
Samsung Magician Supported from version 7.0 — benchmarking, PSID revert, password registration and firmware updates
Compatibility
Published Operating Systems Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.10 or later, Android 5.1 (Lollipop) or later
Devices Samsung says only “Macs, PCs, Android devices, gaming consoles and more”. It publishes no device list. iPad, television and specific console support (PS5, Xbox) are not named in any official document and we do not claim them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the T7 and the T7 Shield?
The shell, and what it buys. The plain T7 (MU-PC…) is aluminium with no IP rating and a 2 m shock rating. The Shield (MU-PE…) is rubberised, IP65 rated and drop-rated to 3 m, and Samsung credits it with better heat control on long transfers. Speeds are the same.
Is it waterproof?
It is IP65 — dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. That covers rain, spray and a spill. It is not for immersion. Note also that Samsung’s datasheet describes the rating as based on internal testing, and names no certification body.
Will it work with a PlayStation 5, an Xbox or a TV?
Samsung does not name them. It publishes operating-system support (Windows, macOS, Android) and describes the drive loosely as working with “gaming consoles and more”, but publishes no device list, and its manual says compatibility with host devices may vary. It is a standard USB-C SSD so it very likely will — we simply will not promise what Samsung has not stated.
Does it work with an iPad or iPhone?
Samsung does not list iOS or iPadOS support anywhere. A USB-C iPad will generally read an exFAT drive, but this is not a Samsung claim and we will not make it one.
Do I have to set a password?
No. Encryption is hardware-based but password protection is optional and set through Samsung’s software. If you do set one and then forget it, the only route back is a factory reset through Samsung support — which erases the drive.
What cables come with it?
Both — USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A. That is more generous than most portable SSDs and means it works with a new laptop and an older desktop without buying anything.
Singular Expert Insight
The honest question with the Shield is whether you need the shell. Speeds are identical to the plain T7, so what you are paying for is IP65, a 3 m drop rating and Samsung’s claim of steadier performance on long writes. If the drive lives on a desk, that is money spent on nothing. If it goes in a camera bag, on a building site, or anywhere near weather, it is exactly the right purchase — portable SSDs die from being dropped and getting wet, not from wearing out. Two things to keep in perspective: the sustained-write claim is a marketing figure with no test conditions attached and the 1 TB is explicitly the weaker of the capacities on it, and the IP65 rating is Samsung’s own internal test rather than a certified one. Also worth knowing that Samsung’s European pages now show this part as unavailable, so it is run-out stock. Browse our external SSD range, or drive enclosures if you would rather build your own.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

The drive travels — camera bag, site work, holidays — and you want speed that lets you work from it rather than copy off it first.

Skip it if

The drive will live on a desk, in which case the plain T7 is the same speed for less, or you need a device compatibility guarantee Samsung does not publish.

Also consider

The plain T7 if ruggedness is not needed, the 2 TB T7 Shield if 1 TB is tight, or an internal SSD in an enclosure if you want to choose the drive yourself.
