SanDisk Desk Drive 8TB — Desktop SSD, 1,000 MB/s, Built to Stay on the Desk

8TB capacity1,000 MB/s read900 MB/s writeMains powered

The SanDisk Desk Drive is a desktop external SSD rather than a portable one: a 99 mm square block that sits beside the computer, runs from a mains adapter, and holds 8TB at SSD speeds. Part number SDSSDT40-8T00-EM25 is the 8TB model, published at up to 1,000 MB/s read and up to 900 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2. SanDisk describes it plainly as the complete desktop backup solution with hard-drive capacities and SSD speeds, and says it is designed to stay on your desk while you back up your files. That sentence is the product.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This drive cannot be used portably, and that is by design. There is no battery and it is not bus-powered: it needs a mains socket and the AC adapter that comes with it, so it will not run from a laptop on a train. It also has no IP rating and no drop rating at all — none is published — and its operating range stops at 35 °C, lower than SanDisk’s portable drives at 45 °C, which is worth a thought in a Cyprus summer room with no air conditioning. At 268 g and 40 mm tall it is not a bag item. Two more practical notes: it arrives preformatted exFAT, which both Windows and macOS read, and macOS users who want Time Machine or APFS should reformat; and SanDisk publishes no encryption for it, so there is a Kensington lock slot for physical security and nothing on the data side. Tell us the machine and what you are backing up and we will say whether this or a portable drive fits better.

Best For

✓ Whole-machine backups that used to need a hard drive
✓ Photo and video libraries kept beside the computer
✓ Time Machine on a Mac, after reformatting
✓ A permanent second drive that never travels
✓ Replacing a slow desktop external hard drive
✓ Anyone who needs 8TB without a NAS

Key Features

Hard-drive capacity at SSD speed
8TB is desktop-hard-drive territory, and this delivers it with no moving parts at up to 1,000 MB/s — SanDisk quotes up to four times faster than a desktop HDD. For a backup that used to run overnight, that is the difference.

Mains powered, and that is a feature here
A desktop drive with its own power supply is not limited by what a laptop port can deliver, which is part of how it sustains 8TB of writing. The adapter is in the box; nothing extra to buy.

A square block that stays put
99.2 × 99.2 × 40.2 mm and 268 g. It is designed to sit on a desk and be forgotten about, not to be carried. There is a Kensington Security Slot for locking it to the desk.

Acronis True Image and Time Machine
SanDisk includes Acronis True Image for Western Digital as a download for scheduled backups on Windows, and the drive is Apple Time Machine compatible after reformatting on macOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take it with me?
Not really. It has no battery and does not run from USB power alone — it needs its mains adapter, so it only works where there is a socket. Add 268 g, a 40 mm-tall body, no drop protection and no IP rating, and it is clear SanDisk built it to stay on a desk. If you need capacity that travels, look at the portable Extreme range instead.
Will it work with Time Machine on a Mac?
Yes. The drive is Apple Time Machine compatible, though it ships formatted exFAT so that both Windows and macOS can read it out of the box. For Time Machine you will want to reformat it to APFS or Mac OS Extended first — a two-minute job in Disk Utility that erases the drive.
Is 8TB of SSD really faster than a hard drive for backups?
Substantially. A desktop hard drive of this size typically manages around 200 MB/s at best and slows further with small files; this is quoted at up to 1,000 MB/s, and SanDisk claims up to four times the speed of a desktop HDD. Where you feel it most is a restore, not a backup — that is when you are waiting.
Is the data encrypted?
SanDisk publishes no encryption specification for the Desk Drive. What it does have is a Kensington Security Slot for locking the drive physically to a desk. If the backup contains material that must be protected, tell us — other drives in our range publish hardware AES-256, and this one does not.
Singular Expert Insight
The Desk Drive answers a question that used to have only one answer: what do you use for 8TB of backup at home or in a small office, when a NAS is more than you need and a desktop hard drive is too slow. It is honest about being stationary — mains powered, no drop rating, no IP rating, a 35 °C ceiling — and everything about that is a deliberate trade for capacity and price per terabyte. Two things to weigh. The warranty is 3 years, not the 5 years of SanDisk’s portable Extreme SSDs, which for a drive that holds your only backup is worth knowing. And there is no published encryption, so a Kensington lock is the only security it offers. If the 8TB is meant to be a working drive that travels, this is the wrong shape entirely; if it is meant to be the thing your machine backs up to every night, it is very well suited, and considerably faster than the external hard drives it replaces.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want 8TB of backup or library storage that lives beside the computer and restores quickly. Mains powered with the adapter included, 1,000 MB/s, Acronis and Time Machine support.

Skip it if

The drive needs to travel — it will not run without a mains socket and has no drop or weather protection. Skip it too if the backup must be encrypted, since SanDisk publishes no encryption for it.

Also consider

An Extreme Portable SSD if the capacity needs to travel. An external hard drive if price per terabyte matters more than speed. A NAS if several machines need to reach the same storage.
