SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB — officially licensed for PlayStation 5
1000 MB/s readPS5 licensedIP65 rated3 m drop protection
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PlayStation 5, part number SDSSDE62P-1T00-G25, is an officially licensed 1 TB external drive: 1000 MB/s read over USB 3.2 Gen 2, in an IP65-rated body rated for a 3-metre drop. It connects by USB-C and works equally well with a PC, a Mac or an Xbox — the licensing is about certainty rather than exclusivity.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Read this before buying for a PS5. A PS5 can store PS5 games on an external USB drive but cannot play them from one — they have to be copied back to the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive before they run. PS4 games, by contrast, play directly from this drive. So it is excellent for keeping a large library ready to copy across in a couple of minutes instead of re-downloading, and it is not a replacement for internal storage. The same rule applies on Xbox Series X and S. SanDisk publishes no write speed for this drive. The drive connects by USB-C; the console USB-A ports work but limit the speed.
Best For
✓ Keeping a large PS5 library without re-downloading
✓ Playing PS4 titles directly from the drive
✓ Xbox Series X and S archives, under the same rule
✓ A rugged drive for a bag or a rucksack
✓ PC and Mac use alongside a console
✓ Anyone with a slow or capped internet connection
Key Features
Officially licensed, which removes the guesswork
Sony licensing means the console recognises and formats the drive without the compatibility questions that come with generic enclosures. For a device that will hold a hundred gigabytes of downloads, that certainty is most of what you are paying for.
1000 MB/s read over USB 3.2 Gen 2
Fast enough that moving a large PS5 title back to internal storage is a couple of minutes rather than a re-download that could take an evening. On a connection with a data cap, that difference is the whole point of owning the drive.
IP65 and a 3-metre drop rating
Dust-tight and protected against water jets, in a body rated to survive a fall from three metres. This is a drive designed to live in a rucksack and go to a friend house, which is exactly what a console drive does.
It is not console-only
Plug it into a PC, a Mac or a laptop and it behaves as an ordinary USB-C external SSD. The licensing does not lock it to the console, so it remains useful long after the console is replaced.

Singular Expert Insight
The honest way to sell this drive is to explain what a console drive can and cannot do, because the disappointment otherwise is immediate. A PS5 will not run current-generation games from any external USB drive — that is Sony rule, not SanDisk shortcoming — so this is a library you keep beside the console, not a bigger console. Where it earns its money is on the copy back: minutes instead of a re-download, which on a Cyprus connection with a monthly cap is not a small thing. The IP65 body and 3-metre rating are there because these drives travel. If you want games to actually run from added storage, that is an internal M.2 drive for the PS5 expansion slot and we can advise on one. Otherwise this doubles as an ordinary external SSD for a PC or Mac, which is what most of them end up doing.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You have a PS5 with a full internal drive and a large digital library, and you would rather copy a game back in two minutes than re-download it.
Skip it if
You expected PS5 games to run from it — they will not, on any external USB drive. For that you need an internal M.2 drive in the console expansion slot.
Also consider
An internal M.2 SSD for the PS5 expansion slot is what runs games directly. For general computer use, the standard Extreme Portable SSD is the same drive without the console branding.
