SanDisk Extreme Fit 256GB USB-C — 400 MB/s read in a 3-gram drive

400 MB/s readUSB-C onlyUSB 3.2 Gen 13 grams

The SanDisk Extreme Fit 256GB USB-C flash drive, part number SDCZ530-256G-G46, is a low-profile USB-C stick rated at 400 MB/s read. It measures 18.5 by 15.7 by 13.6 mm and weighs 3 grams — small enough to leave permanently in a laptop, tablet or phone without it catching on anything. It is a single-connector drive, and that is the thing to check before ordering.

Compatibility — check before buying:
USB-C only. There is no USB-A connector on this drive and none folds out. If your laptop or desktop has only rectangular USB-A ports, this drive will not plug into it without an adapter. Phones, tablets and computers with USB-C take it directly. If you need both connectors, the Ultra Dual Drive Go is the drive with a USB-A end as well — and note that the similarly named Ultra Fit is the USB-A version, not this one. SanDisk rates the drive for operation from 0 to 45 degrees Celsius, so a car dashboard in a Cyprus August is outside its range. In the box: the drive alone — no cable, no adapter, no case.

Best For

✓ Laptops and tablets with USB-C ports
✓ A drive left permanently in a port
✓ Expanding storage on a USB-C phone
✓ Carrying files between modern machines
✓ Anyone tired of drives that stick out and snap
✓ USB-C only setups such as recent MacBooks

Key Features

400 MB/s read at this capacity
SanDisk rates 128 GB and above at 400 MB/s in this line, so the 256 GB drive sits at the top of the ladder rather than partway up it. Over USB 3.2 Gen 1, which is a 5 Gbps link, that is close to what the connection itself allows.

Small enough to forget about
At 18.5 by 15.7 by 13.6 mm and 3 grams, this drive protrudes barely more than the connector itself. That is the entire design goal: a drive that lives in a laptop permanently as extra storage, rather than one you plug in and remove.

USB 3.2 Gen 1, backward compatible
It works in older USB-C ports at their own speed, so a USB 2.0 Type-C port will still read the drive, just slowly. What it cannot do is become a USB-A drive — the connector is fixed and there is no adapter in the box.

SanDisk Memory Zone app, as a download
SanDisk offers its Memory Zone app for managing and backing up files to the drive. It is downloaded rather than preloaded, so the drive arrives empty and nothing has to be uninstalled if you would rather not use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this drive plug into my laptop?
Only if the laptop has a USB-C port. This drive has a fixed USB-C connector and no USB-A end. Recent MacBooks, most modern Windows laptops and Android phones take it directly. If your machine has the older rectangular USB-A ports, you would need an adapter, or a dual-connector drive instead.
Is this the same as the SanDisk Ultra Fit?
No, and the names are close enough to cause trouble. The Ultra Fit is the USB-A version of this idea — the same tiny form factor with the rectangular connector. The Extreme Fit is the USB-C one. Both are rated 400 MB/s at 256 GB, so the connector is the whole decision.
What write speed should I expect?
SanDisk does not publish one for this line, and we will not estimate. Its datasheet says only that write speed is lower than the 400 MB/s read figure. If write speed is critical to what you are doing, tell us and we will suggest a drive whose maker states the number.
Can I leave it in my laptop all the time?
That is what it is designed for — it barely protrudes past the connector. Two practical notes: it will warm up during long transfers, and SanDisk rates it for 0 to 45 degrees Celsius, so a laptop left in a hot car is outside its stated range.
Singular Expert Insight
The decision on this drive is not speed, it is the connector, and it is worth pausing on because SanDisk sells two nearly identical products. The Extreme Fit here is USB-C only; the Ultra Fit is USB-A only; both are tiny and both read 400 MB/s at 256 GB. Buy the wrong one and it physically will not plug in. If your machines are mixed, the Ultra Dual Drive Go carries both connectors on one body and is the safer purchase, at the cost of being larger. The one figure we cannot give you is write speed — SanDisk publishes none for this line at any capacity, which is worth knowing if you plan to copy large amounts onto it regularly. See our other USB flash drives, or our external SSDs if you need real sustained write performance.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your laptop, tablet or phone has USB-C and you want a drive small enough to leave plugged in permanently, reading at 400 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 1.

Skip it if

Your computer has only USB-A ports — this connector will not fit. Skip it too if write speed matters to you, since SanDisk publishes none for this line.

Also consider

The Ultra Fit is the same tiny drive with a USB-A connector. The Ultra Dual Drive Go carries both USB-C and USB-A on one body if your machines are mixed.
