SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 4TB — 1,050 MB/s, IP65, Three-Metre Drop Rating

4TB capacityUp to 1,050 MB/s readIP65, 3 m drop256-bit AES encryption

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is the rugged middle of SanDisk’s external range, and this is the 4TB model: USB 3.2 Gen 2, up to 1,050 MB/s read and up to 1,000 MB/s write, in a silicone-shelled body with a carabiner loop moulded into the corner. Part number SDSSDE61-4T00-G25 is the 4TB version. IP65 dust and water resistance, a three-metre drop rating, shock resistance to G1500 and 256-bit AES with password protection make it the drive for work that happens outside an office, and 4TB is enough to hold a full project rather than a working slice of one.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two useful things to know before ordering. First, the speed is 10 Gbps, and that is deliberate rather than a shortfall: 1,050 MB/s is reachable on essentially any modern USB-C port, where the 2,000 MB/s drives need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port that most machines — and no Mac — actually have. On the machine in front of you this drive will often match a more expensive one. Second, the box: SanDisk publishes a silicone shell and a carabiner loop for this line but does not publish the cable contents, and it publishes no weight for the 4TB model either. Retailers commonly say a USB-C cable plus a USB-A adapter; that is their claim, not SanDisk’s, so if the USB-A connection matters to you, ask us and we will open the pack and tell you what is actually in it. One caution worth stating for a drive this size: a single drive is not a backup. IP65 and a drop rating protect against accidents, and encryption protects against theft — neither protects against the drive failing. If this will hold your only copy of something, plan the second copy at the same time.

Best For

✓ Photo and video work carried between locations
✓ A full project on one drive rather than a slice
✓ Outdoor and location shoots in dust or rain
✓ Carrying client material that needs a password
✓ Editing directly from an external drive
✓ Machines with an ordinary 10 Gbps USB-C port

Key Features

1,050 MB/s read, 1,000 MB/s write
SanDisk publishes both directions for this line. It is worth knowing these are line-level figures rather than a 4TB-specific pair — SanDisk does not break the capacities out — and that this is a speed almost any current machine can actually deliver.

IP65 and a three-metre drop rating
Dust-tight and resistant to water jets, with shock resistance published at G1500 and vibration at 5 gRMS. This is what separates the Extreme line from a plain portable SSD, and it is why the drive is designed to clip to the outside of a bag.

256-bit AES with password protection
Set a password and the contents cannot be read by whoever finds the drive. On a 4TB drive carrying a client’s material, that is the difference between losing hardware and reporting a breach.

Silicone shell and carabiner loop
A rubberised shell that takes the impact and a moulded loop for a carabiner. SanDisk does not publish a weight for the 4TB model, but the whole line is designed to hang off a bag rather than sit inside one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why buy this instead of the 2,000 MB/s Extreme PRO?
Because on most machines you would not see the difference. The PRO’s 2,000 MB/s needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port, which is rare and which no Mac implements; on a normal 10 Gbps port both drives run at about the same speed. Buy the PRO if you have that port, or if you want hardware-level encryption and a forged aluminium chassis. Otherwise this is the better value.
What comes in the box?
SanDisk does not publish a box-contents list for this part number, which is unusual for them. Retailer listings commonly say a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter, but that is a reseller claim and we will not repeat it as fact. Ask us and we will look in the pack before it ships.
Is IP65 enough for shooting outdoors?
For rain, spray and dust, comfortably — that is exactly what IP65 covers, and the three-metre drop rating handles the rest of what happens on location. It is not an immersion rating, so it will not survive being dropped in water. Dry it before plugging it in.
Is 4TB on one drive a good idea?
As a working drive or a second copy, yes — it removes the juggling of several smaller drives. As the only copy of four terabytes of work, no. Every drive can fail, and neither the IP rating nor the encryption changes that. We would rather say so than sell you a single point of failure.
Singular Expert Insight
This is the drive most people should be looking at in SanDisk’s external range, and the reason is unglamorous: 10 Gbps is the speed your machine actually has. The 2,000 MB/s Extreme PRO is genuinely faster, but only on a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port that most laptops and no Mac provide, so on real hardware the two often perform identically — and the honest reasons to pay more for the PRO are its hardware encryption and forged aluminium chassis rather than the headline number. Against the cheaper end of the range, what this drive buys is protection: IP65 and three metres, where the entry-level Portable SSD has no IP rating and two metres. Capacity is the last decision, and 4TB sits where a full project fits without the drive becoming an archive you cannot afford to lose. Pair it with a desktop external hard drive for the second copy, and see our full external SSD range if a different capacity or speed class suits better.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want 4TB that travels, survives rain and a fall, and can be password protected, at a speed your machine can actually reach. IP65, three metres, 1,050 MB/s and 256-bit AES.

Skip it if

You have a genuine 20 Gbps port and want to use it — the Extreme PRO is the drive then. Skip it too if this would be the only copy of work you cannot lose.

Also consider

The Extreme PRO Portable SSD if your machine has a 20 Gbps port or you need hardware encryption. The 8TB Extreme if 4TB is not enough. An external hard drive as the inexpensive second copy.
