SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB — 420 MB/s read, 380 MB/s write
380 MB/s write420 MB/s readSolid state flashUSB-A
The SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.2 Solid State Flash Drive, part number SDCZ880-256G-G46, is the one drive in SanDisk USB range that publishes a write speed as well as a read speed: 420 MB/s read and 380 MB/s write. It uses SSD-class flash inside an aluminium USB-A stick, which is why it can sustain a write rate the ordinary Ultra drives cannot state at all.
Compatibility — check before buying:
USB-A connector. It fits the rectangular port on laptops, desktops and docks, but not a USB-C port or a phone without an adapter. The write figure is the reason to buy this drive. Every other SanDisk USB stick on our shelves publishes read speed only; this one is rated 380 MB/s write, which is what decides how long it takes to copy a project onto it. Password protection is software-based through the SanDisk app vault folder — useful, but not the same as a hardware-encrypted drive, and we would not describe it as one. In the box: the drive alone.
Best For
✓ Photographers and videographers moving footage
✓ Working directly from the drive rather than storing
✓ Copying large projects between machines
✓ Anyone who has waited on a slow flash drive
✓ Docks and desktops with USB-A ports
✓ A pocket drive that behaves like an SSD
Key Features
380 MB/s write, published — the whole point
Read speed tells you how fast files come off a drive. Write speed tells you how long you wait while they go on. SanDisk publishes no write figure for the Ultra, Ultra Fit, Ultra Luxe or Slider lines. It publishes one here, and 380 MB/s means a 30 GB video folder copies across in a couple of minutes rather than a coffee break.
Solid state flash rather than ordinary USB memory
SanDisk describes this as a solid state drive in a flash-drive body, and that is what allows the sustained write rate. In practice it means the speed holds up during a long copy instead of collapsing once a small buffer fills, which is the usual behaviour of a cheap stick.
Aluminium body with a password vault
The casing is metal, and the SanDisk app provides a password-protected vault folder for files you would rather not have readable if the drive is lost. It is software protection applied to a folder, not whole-drive hardware encryption.
Rated from -10 to 70 degrees Celsius
A far wider range than the 0 to 35 degrees of the everyday Ultra drives. For a drive that travels between locations, in and out of vehicles and bags, that difference is more practical than it looks on paper.

Singular Expert Insight
This is the only USB stick in the SanDisk range that answers the question everyone actually has, which is how fast it writes. The Ultra, Ultra Fit, Ultra Luxe and Slider drives all publish a read figure and stay silent on writing, and at 512 GB that silence hides a real wait. Here you get 420 read and 380 write in print, on SSD-class flash, in a metal body rated from -10 to 70 degrees. Buy it if you fill drives rather than just carry them. If you need more than this — sustained multi-stream video, or terabyte-scale libraries — the honest next step is an external SSD rather than a larger stick. Our other USB flash drives cover everyday use.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You copy large amounts onto a drive regularly and want a published write speed rather than a read-only headline — 380 MB/s write, 420 MB/s read, in a metal USB-A stick.
Skip it if
You only carry documents and photos off a drive — the everyday Ultra drives cost less and read almost as fast. Skip it too if your machines are USB-C only.
Also consider
An external SSD goes considerably faster over USB 3.2 Gen 2 if you are editing rather than transferring. The Ultra Fit and Extreme Fit are cheaper if read speed is all you need.
