SanDisk Ultra 256GB SDXC — 150 MB/s read, Class 10

150 MB/s readClass 10 · U1256 GB SDXCFull-size SD card

The SanDisk Ultra 256GB SDXC card, part number SDSDUNC-256G-GN6IN, is the everyday full-size SD card in SanDisk range: 150 MB/s read, Class 10 and U1, with plenty of room for photos and Full HD video. It is the card for a compact camera, a family DSLR or a device that simply needs a large, reliable SD card — not for 4K bursts, where the Extreme line is what the camera asks for.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Full-size SD slot only — it will not fit a microSD slot, and no adapter converts it down. It is SDXC, so a camera supporting only SDHC cannot read it; SDXC support arrived around 2010. SanDisk publishes a read speed for this line but no write speed, which matters if you are choosing a card for continuous shooting: for 4K or RAW bursts the Extreme cards publish a write figure and this one does not. The card ships formatted exFAT. In the box: the card alone — no reader, no case, no cable.

Best For

✓ Compact cameras and family DSLRs
✓ Photos in JPEG and Full HD video
✓ Devices needing a large, simple SD card
✓ A spare card kept in the bag
✓ Everyday shooting where speed is not the constraint
✓ Buyers who want capacity rather than burst performance

Key Features

150 MB/s read at this capacity
SanDisk quotes 150 MB/s for the 256 GB and 512 GB Ultra SD cards. Smaller sizes in the same line are slower — 140 MB/s at 64 and 128 GB, 120 MB/s at 32 GB — so the figure on this page belongs to this capacity and is not a family headline borrowed downwards.

Class 10 and U1 are the ratings SanDisk publishes
Class 10 and U1 both promise a 10 MB/s sustained write floor, which is what Full HD recording needs. There is no V30 or U3 mark on this line, and no A1 or A2 app rating. If a device asks for V30 for 4K, this is not the card it is asking for.

256 GB of everyday capacity
Roughly 30,000 twelve-megapixel JPEGs, or in the region of nine hours of Full HD at 50 Mbps. For most family cameras that is more than a year of shooting on one card, which is the real appeal of this line rather than raw speed.

The durability the whole SD range shares
Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof and X-ray-proof, rated from -25 to 85 degrees Celsius. Airport scanners, a wet afternoon and a card dropped in a bag are all within what SanDisk covers — though the protection is for the card, not for the only copy of your photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I record 4K video on the SanDisk Ultra?
SanDisk rates this line Class 10 and U1, which guarantees 10 MB/s of sustained write. Most cameras ask for V30, meaning 30 MB/s, before they will enable 4K recording. Some will record 4K on a U1 card and some will refuse or drop frames. If 4K is the plan, the Extreme SDXC is the card built for it.
Why is no write speed listed?
SanDisk publishes only a read figure for the Ultra SD line and no write figure at any capacity. We will not invent one. If write speed matters to what you are shooting — continuous bursts, long video takes — choose a card whose maker states the number, which in this range means the Extreme or Extreme PRO.
Will this card fit my camera?
If it takes a full-size SD card and supports SDXC, yes. Cameras from roughly 2010 onwards do. Older bodies may be SDHC-only and will not read a 256 GB card. It does not fit microSD slots. Send us your camera model and we will confirm which card suits it.
How many photos does 256 GB hold?
Around 30,000 JPEGs from a twelve-megapixel camera, or several thousand RAW files from a modern high-resolution body. For Full HD video at 50 Mbps expect roughly nine hours. Exact numbers depend on your camera settings, so treat these as a working guide rather than a promise.
Singular Expert Insight
The Ultra is the card most people should stop at, and the one some people should walk past. If you shoot JPEGs and Full HD on a compact or a family DSLR, its 150 MB/s read and 256 GB of space are more than the camera will ever ask for, and the extra you would spend on an Extreme goes unused. If your camera has a 4K mode and names V30 on its media page, this is the wrong card — SanDisk rates the Ultra U1 and publishes no write speed at all, and no amount of read speed fixes that. Compare it against the Extreme in our SD cards range, or tell us the camera and we will say which of the two it actually needs.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want a large, dependable full-size SD card for photos and Full HD video, and 256 GB of space matters more to you than burst speed. Class 10 and U1 cover everything a compact or family DSLR asks for.

Skip it if

Your camera records 4K and names V30 or U3 on its media requirements, or you shoot continuous RAW bursts. Skip it too if your device takes microSD or is SDHC-only.

Also consider

The Extreme 256 GB, SDSDXVV, publishes 180 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write with V30 for 4K. The Extreme PRO SDSDXXD goes further at 200 and 140.
