SanDisk Ultra Luxe 1TB — Full Metal USB-A Drive, 400 MB/s Read, Password Protected
1TB capacityUp to 400 MB/s readFull cast metal bodyPassword protection
The SanDisk Ultra Luxe is a 1TB USB-A flash drive in a full cast metal body — no plastic, no moving parts, no cap, just a solid 8 g slab with a keyring loop through one end. SanDisk publishes up to 400 MB/s read at this capacity over USB 3.2 Gen 1, and the product page adds password protection with 128-bit AES encryption, applied through SanDisk’s own app. Part number SDCZ74-1T00-G46 is the 1TB model. It is the drive to choose when the stick will be handled every day and needs to survive a pocket, a keyring and being dropped on tiles.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the port and the case before you order. This is a USB-A drive only — the connector is the rectangular one. A phone or a USB-C-only laptop cannot use it without an adapter, and none is included. If your machines are USB-C, the same drive exists as the Ultra Luxe USB Type-C model instead. The password protection is software-based: it is applied by SanDisk’s app, so unlocking the drive on another machine means installing that app there. It is not the same thing as a hardware-encrypted drive that unlocks with a keypad. One further note — SanDisk’s documentation for this line gives an operating range of 0 °C to 35 °C, lower than some of its siblings, so it is not the drive to leave on a dashboard in summer. Tell us the machine and we will confirm the port type.
Best For
✓ A keyring drive that gets daily handling
✓ Desktops, older laptops, televisions and car stereos
✓ Carrying files that need a password
✓ Anyone who has broken plastic drives before
✓ Large media libraries on a single stick
✓ Office use where drives get passed around
Key Features
A single piece of metal
Full cast metal construction with a keyring loop through the body and no cap to lose. There is no hinge, no swivel and no plastic edge to crack — the usual failure points of a keyring drive simply are not there.
400 MB/s read at 1TB
SanDisk publishes 400 MB/s read for 128GB and above in this line, with 64GB at 300 MB/s and 32GB at 150 MB/s. The number on this page is this capacity’s number.
Password protection with 128-bit AES
SanDisk’s product page publishes password protection with 128-bit AES encryption for this drive, applied through its app. Set a password and the files cannot be read by whoever finds the drive — a meaningful difference from a plain flash drive if you carry anything confidential.
A keyring drive at 8 grams
Roughly 40 × 15.8 × 5.7 mm and 8 g, so it is slim enough to sit flat against a set of keys rather than sticking out at an angle.

Singular Expert Insight
At 1TB the Ultra Luxe reads at exactly the same 400 MB/s as the Ultra Fit, the Ultra Slider and the Dual Drive Go, so speed is not what separates them — body and connector are. This is the metal one with a keyring loop and a USB-A plug, and the reason to buy it over its siblings is durability plus the published password protection, which most of the range does not have. The comparison that costs money is the Ultra Luxe USB Type-C: identical idea, identical speed, different plug — if your laptop and phone are USB-C, buy that one instead of this plus an adapter. And if the drive is going to be worked from rather than carried, no flash drive is right for that; a small portable SSD sustains long writes and this will not.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want a 1TB keyring drive that will not break, plugging into USB-A ports, with the option of putting a password on the contents. Metal body, 8 g, 400 MB/s read.
Skip it if
Your machines are USB-C — buy the USB-C version rather than this plus an adapter. Skip it too if you need hardware encryption that works without installing software, or if the drive would live somewhere hot.
Also consider
The Ultra Luxe USB Type-C for the same drive with a USB-C plug. The Ultra Fit if it will stay plugged into one machine. A portable SSD if you will be working from the drive.
