Seagate One Touch with Password 5TB — STKZ5000400 Portable Hard Drive

5TB USB 3.0AES-256 Hardware EncryptionBus-Powered — No AdapterBlack

The Seagate STKZ5000400 is a 5 TB One Touch with Password — a 2.5-inch portable hard drive with password-activated AES-256 hardware encryption built into the drive itself. Seagate lists it under part number STKZ5000400; the EAN on this listing is 3660619041817. It is bus-powered over a single USB cable, ships with an 18-inch micro-B to USB-A cable, and comes preformatted exFAT so it works on Windows and Mac out of the box. Colour: Black. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The encryption on this drive is real hardware encryption, and it is worth being precise about that because Seagate’s own documents are easy to misread. The datasheet says “password activated hardware encryption”. The user manual then says “Toolkit is required to enable security”, which many listings turn into “software encryption” — that is wrong. Toolkit is the app you use to set the password; the AES-256 engine lives in the drive’s USB bridge controller. Three things prove it: an Unlock Drive app is stored on the drive itself and works with no Toolkit installed; the drive supports a crypto-erase that makes data unrecoverable instantly, which only a hardware-held media key allows; and a forgotten password with no reset key leaves only a factory reset. This is Seagate Secure, the same self-encrypting mechanism as on LaCie’s Rugged Secure. Now the part-number trap. The prefix encodes both capacity tier and whether the drive has the password feature: STKZ is 4–5 TB with password, STKC is 4–5 TB without, STKY is 1–2 TB with, STKB is 1–2 TB without. So STKC5000400 is the same capacity and colour with no encryption at all, and listings substitute the two constantly. The trailing three digits are colour only: 400 Black, 401 Silver, 402 Light Blue, 404 Space Grey. Black is available in every region. Finally, what Seagate does not publish: no spindle speed, no cache size, no MTBF and no acoustic figures appear in any One Touch datasheet, and the Rescue Data Recovery term in years is not stated either — Rescue is included, but the datasheet does not say for how long.

Best For

✓ carrying data that needs to be unreadable if the drive is lost or stolen
✓ anyone who wants encryption without setting up software containers or full-disk tools
✓ a portable backup drive that works on both Windows and Mac out of the box

Key Features

Password-activated AES-256 hardware encryption
The encryption engine is in the drive, not in the software. You set a password once through Seagate Toolkit, and from then on the drive presents itself locked; the Unlock Drive app stored on the drive itself will open it on a machine with no Toolkit installed. Because the key is held in hardware, a crypto-erase wipes the drive instantly and irreversibly. Seagate brands this Seagate Secure. Note the flip side: if you lose the password and have no reset key, the only route is a factory reset that destroys the data — there is no back door, which is the point.

Bus-powered, exFAT, Windows and Mac
A single 18-inch micro-B to USB-A cable carries power and data — no mains adapter. The drive ships preformatted exFAT, so it mounts read-write on both Windows and macOS without reformatting. If you want to use it as a Time Machine target you will need to reformat it for macOS, which will remove Windows compatibility.

Seagate Toolkit, plus bundled cloud and photo services
Toolkit handles one-click and scheduled backup, folder mirroring, and the password setup for the drive’s encryption. The current datasheet also lists a six-month Mylio Photos subscription and six months of Dropbox Backup. Rescue Data Recovery Services are included, though Seagate does not state the term in years anywhere in this datasheet.

Physical
Dimensions 115.3 × 80 × 20.9 mm (4.539 × 3.15 × 0.823 in) — the 5 TB uses the same chassis as the 4 TB, not the thinner 11.7 mm case of the 1 and 2 TB models

Security and Software
Encryption Password-activated AES 256-bit hardware encryption, branded Seagate Secure. The engine is in the drive; Seagate Toolkit is required only to set and manage the password
Unlock Without Toolkit Yes — an Unlock Drive app is stored on the drive and runs on a machine with no Toolkit installed

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the encryption hardware or software?
Hardware. Seagate’s datasheet says “password activated hardware encryption” and the Toolkit manual lists One Touch with Password among its self-encrypting drives using AES 256-bit. The confusion comes from the user manual’s line that “Toolkit is required to enable security” — that is about setting the password, not about performing the encryption. The give-away is that an Unlock Drive app sits on the drive and works without Toolkit installed, and that the drive supports an instant crypto-erase. Neither is possible with file-level software encryption.
What happens if I forget the password?
You lose the data. Without the reset key, the only recourse is resetting the drive to factory settings, which performs a cryptographic erase — Seagate’s own manual describes this as data that “can never be recovered”. That is the correct behaviour for a self-encrypting drive and the reason it is worth buying, but it does mean the password needs to be stored somewhere you trust. There is no manufacturer back door.
What speed and cache does it have?
Seagate does not publish either. No One Touch datasheet, in any revision or region, states a spindle speed, a cache size, an MTBF or an acoustic figure. Any such numbers on a marketplace listing are invented — and at least one large retailer’s page for this family renders the specifications of a completely different internal drive. What Seagate does publish: USB 3.0 at 5 Gb/s, a micro-B port on the drive (stated in the manual, not the datasheet), and bus-powered operation. One specific warning for this capacity: at least one major retailer’s page titled for the STKZ5000400 renders the specification block of a 24 TB internal BarraCuda — 7200 RPM, 512 MB cache. Those figures have nothing to do with this drive.
What do I need to know before buying the STKZ5000400?
Check the prefix, not just the number. STKC5000400 is the same capacity and the same colour without the password feature — the prefix letter is the only thing that distinguishes an encrypting drive from a plain one, and sellers mix them up. Also note that the port on the drive is micro-B, not USB-C; anyone advertising USB-C on this family is wrong. And be aware that Rescue Data Recovery is included but Seagate does not state its term in years on this datasheet, so treat any specific number you see as unverified.
Singular Expert Insight
One Touch with Password is the cheapest honest way to get a self-encrypting portable drive. The important thing to understand is that the AES-256 engine really is in the hardware — the Unlock Drive app on the drive works without Toolkit, and the crypto-erase is instant, neither of which a software container can do. That also means the security is genuine: lose the password and the reset key and the data is gone, permanently. Judged as a plain drive it is unremarkable and Seagate publishes almost nothing about its mechanics — no RPM, no cache, no MTBF — so buy it for the encryption and the convenience rather than for performance. And check the prefix: STKC5000400 is the identical drive without any encryption at all.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want data that is unreadable to anyone who picks the drive up, without setting up software encryption yourself. AES-256 in hardware, one cable, no adapter, exFAT for Windows and Mac.

Skip it if

you need the drive to be readable by anyone who finds it, or you cannot guarantee the password will be kept safely — a forgotten password on a self-encrypting drive means permanent data loss. Skip it too if you specifically need a USB-C port on the drive; this family is micro-B.

Also consider

STKZ4000400 is the 4 TB version in the same chassis and the same colour. STKZ4000402 is 4 TB in Light Blue. STKC5000400 is the same capacity and colour without the password feature — check the prefix. STLC6000400 is the desktop One Touch Hub, which also has password protection and adds a USB-C and USB-A charging hub.
