Seagate SkyHawk 4TB — 24/7 surveillance drive for up to 64 HD cameras, Rescue included

4TB · 256MB cacheCMR recording180 TB/year workload3-year Rescue included

The Seagate SkyHawk ST4000VX016 is a 4TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive built for always-on video surveillance recorders, where the disk writes continuously instead of in the short bursts a desktop drive is designed around. Part number ST4000VX016 is the +Rescue version of the SkyHawk 4TB — mechanically the same drive as the standard ST4000VX015, with three years of Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services added in the box. It is rated for a 180 TB per year workload, 8,760 power-on hours a year, and up to 64 HD camera streams. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is an internal 3.5-inch SATA drive: it needs a free 3.5-inch bay, a SATA data cable and a SATA power connector, and it is neither portable nor bus-powered. It is tuned for surveillance write patterns and 24×7 duty rather than for use as a boot drive; Seagate’s NAS line is IronWolf and its desktop line is BarraCuda. Recording is CMR, so it avoids the rewrite slowdown SMR drives show during RAID rebuilds — but note that the older ST4000VX013 at the same capacity is an SMR drive, so check the exact part number when replacing a disk. One caution: Seagate’s own documents disagree about rotational vibration sensors on this part — the GB datasheet edition and DS2118.1 list them as fitted, the US edition does not. We publish both positions in the spec table rather than pick one.

Best For

✓ DVR and NVR recorders running around the clock
✓ Small business, retail and warehouse CCTV systems
✓ Replacing a failed desktop drive inside an existing recorder
✓ Installations recording many HD camera streams at once
✓ Systems where a drive must survive constant sequential writing
✓ Sites that want data recovery cover included from day one

Key Features

Built for continuous writing
Surveillance recorders write almost non-stop, which is why this drive carries a 180 TB per year workload rating and 8,760 power-on hours a year — a full 24×7 duty cycle. A desktop drive of the same capacity is typically rated at well under a third of that workload.

CMR, not SMR
Seagate states conventional magnetic recording (CMR) explicitly in the datasheet for this model. CMR keeps write performance predictable when a recorder is streaming to the disk constantly, and avoids the long rebuild slowdowns that shingled drives show in RAID sets.

Three years of Rescue Data Recovery
The trailing digits are what separate this part from the standard model: ST4000VX016 ships with a three-year Seagate Rescue Data Recovery Services plan, so a failed drive can be sent for recovery rather than simply replaced. The service is not offered in every country.

Quiet, cool and low-power
2.5 W idle and 3.7 W in read/write, with acoustics of 2.3 bels idle and 2.7 bels seeking, and an operating range of 0–65 °C. That matters in a sealed recorder cabinet where several drives share one small fan.

Interface SATA 6Gb/s
Cache 256 MB
Spindle Speed 5,400 RPM — published only in Seagate product manual 201370100 Rev H (January 2024); every datasheet and every earlier manual revision omits it, and the “5,900 RPM” figure seen in some listings has no Seagate source
Recording Technology CMR — conventional (non-shingled) magnetic recording, stated as an explicit datasheet line
Max Sustained Transfer Rate 180 MB/s
Reliability & Workload
Workload Rate Limit <180 TB per year, annualised
MTBF 1,000,000 hours
Annualised Failure Rate 0.87% — product manual only, this figure is absent from the datasheets

Non-Recoverable Read Errors 1 per 10E14 bits read
Power-On Hours 8,760 per year (24×7)
Rotational Vibration Sensors Sources conflict — the GB edition of DS1902.17 and DS2118.1 both list “Yes”, while the US edition of DS1902.17 shows a dash. Two of the three editions state the sensors are fitted.
Surveillance Ratings
Max Drive Bays Sources conflict — the GB datasheet edition and DS2118.1 state up to 16 bays, the US datasheet edition says up to 8, and the product manual writes “8+”
Max Camera Streams Up to 64 HD cameras
Stream Test Conditions Seagate does not publish stream test conditions for the standard SkyHawk. The 1080p / H.265 / 25 fps footnote circulated with this figure belongs to SkyHawk AI only and is not carried over here.

Omitted Specifications Latency, air or helium fill, and the annualised failure rate inside the datasheets are not published for this drive. Seagate also publishes no EAN in the datasheet or manual — the code above comes from the product record and the EU price list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ST4000VX016 and ST4000VX015?
They are the same drive mechanically. Seagate’s product manual lists ST4000VX015 under “Standard models” and ST4000VX016 under “+Rescue models”: the only difference is that this part includes a three-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan. Capacity, cache, workload rating and performance are identical. Watch the numbering: at 2TB it is ST2000VX016 that is the standard model and ST2000VX017 that adds Rescue, so the same “016” ending means the opposite thing one capacity down.
Is this drive CMR or SMR?
CMR. Seagate prints conventional magnetic recording as an explicit line in the datasheet for this model. Be careful with the part number, though — the older ST4000VX013 at the same capacity is an SMR drive, and the two are easy to confuse in a listing.
Can I use a SkyHawk in a NAS or as a normal desktop drive?
It will work, but it is tuned for the sequential, always-on writing a recorder does. For a multi-bay NAS, Seagate’s IronWolf drives add rotational vibration handling and NAS-specific firmware; for a desktop or boot drive, a BarraCuda or an SSD is a better match.
How many cameras and how many drives can it handle?
Seagate rates the drive for up to 64 HD camera streams. On drive bays Seagate’s documents disagree: the GB datasheet edition and DS2118.1 say up to 16, the US edition says up to 8, and the product manual writes “8+”. All three are Seagate figures, so we publish all three instead of choosing.
Singular Expert Insight
The whole point of a surveillance-class drive is the write pattern: a recorder streams to the disk continuously, and consumer desktop drives are rated for a fraction of the workload this one carries. Within the range the choice is mostly about part numbers rather than performance — ST4000VX015 is the same hardware without the Rescue plan, and ST4000VX013 is a cheaper SMR drive that we would not put in a recorder. Compare the range in our surveillance hard drives category, and if the drive is actually going into a multi-bay NAS rather than a DVR, look at our NAS hard drives instead.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You are building or repairing a DVR or NVR that records around the clock. The 180 TB/year workload rating, CMR recording and 64-stream rating are what separate this from a desktop drive of the same size.

Skip it if

The drive is going into a busy multi-bay NAS or a workstation. NAS-tuned firmware and a settled rotational vibration specification matter there, and an IronWolf drive gives you both without the documentation conflict.

Also consider

ST4000VX015 if you do not need the Rescue plan, ST2000VX017 if 2TB is enough, or IronWolf ST4000VN006 when the drive is destined for a NAS rather than a recorder.
