Silicon Power Ultima U03 8GB USB Flash Drive, USB 2.0 Type-A, Retractable Sliding Connector, Mystery Black
Silicon Power Ultima U03 8GB USB Flash Drive — Retractable USB 2.0 Drive
The Silicon Power Ultima U03 8GB (SP008GBUF2U03V1K) is a USB 2.0 flash drive with a USB Type-A plug for carrying documents, photos, installers and backups between computers at the office and at home.
It is a basic 8GB drive for small jobs: documents, presentations, firmware and BIOS update files, printer drivers or a few hundred photos. The connector slides out with one hand and retracts into the glossy diamond-cut case, so there is no cap. Being USB 2.0, it suits small files; for large video or disk images a USB 3.2 drive is the better buy.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Silicon Power Ultima U03 8GB USB flash drive (Mystery Black)
- SP Widget and Recuva software is offered as a free download from Silicon Power — there is no disc in the package
- Silicon Power does not list a cable, adapter or lanyard in the package
What It Means in Practice
- Usable space: a 8GB drive shows about 7.4 GB in Windows — operating systems count in binary units and the file system takes a little space, so this is normal, not a fault.
- USB 2.0 (480 Mbps interface) is comfortable for documents, drivers, firmware files and photos; multi-gigabyte video files copy noticeably slower than on a USB 3.x drive.
- Silicon Power does not quote a read/write MB/s figure for this model, so real speed depends on the host port and on file size — many small files always copy slower than one large file.
- If the drive is formatted FAT32, single files over 4 GB will not copy. Reformat it to exFAT (readable and writable on Windows and macOS) before copying large videos or ISO images.
- Always use Eject / Safely Remove before unplugging, especially right after copying — unplugging during a write is the most common cause of corrupted files on any flash drive.
What Will Not Work
- There is no USB-C plug — on USB-C-only laptops, tablets and phones you need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, or a dual drive such as the Mobile C31.
- It does not run at USB 3.x speed — this is a USB 2.0 drive, even in a USB 3.x port.
- It is not built for continuous 24/7 writing (dashcams, CCTV recorders, servers, running an OS from it) — use an SSD or a high-endurance card for that.
- macOS reads but cannot write NTFS-formatted drives without extra software — use exFAT if you move files between Windows and Mac.
- A single flash drive is not a backup on its own: keep a second copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.
