Why choose an impact dot-matrix printer over a thermal receipt printer?
Thermal receipts use heat-sensitive paper that fades or turns black when exposed to kitchen heat, steam, sunlight or grease. Impact printers like the SP712MC use a ribbon to print on plain paper, so kitchen dockets stay readable for the entire service — and far longer in archive storage.
Does this printer come with an autocutter?
No. The SP712MC is the Tear Bar variant of the SP700 series — operators tear the receipt manually against the built-in metal bar. If you need a full / partial autocutter, look at the SP742 models (e.g. SP742ME3 with Ethernet).
What interface does it use?
Parallel — IEEE 1284 Centronics. This makes it ideal for older POS systems with a parallel/LPT port. For USB, Serial or Ethernet, Star also offers SP712 variants with those interfaces (or plug-in IFBD interface boards).
Can it print in red?
Yes — when fitted with the optional two-color RC700BR (black + red) ribbon. Many POS / kitchen-printing software packages can trigger the red channel via ESC commands, useful for highlighting urgent or allergen items.
