The StarTech.com SFP-10G-BXD-I-ST is a 10 Gbit bidirectional SFP+ transceiver coded for the Cisco SFP-10G-BXD-I. It sends at 1330 nm and receives at 1270 nm over a single strand of single-mode fibre, up to 10 km, with digital diagnostics. It is the downstream (D) end of a BiDi link, used on Cisco routers and switches where fibre strands are scarce. In practice, bidirectional optics are used where fibre is scarce — a leased dark-fibre strand, a full duct or an old building link. Before you order, confirm which end of the strand gets which module and that the fibre is single-mode all the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
A BX-D module must face a BX-U module on the same strand. Two BXD modules will not link — order SFP-10G-BXU-I-ST for the other end. The port is a simplex LC, so you need a single-fibre patch cord. The module is coded for Cisco and StarTech.com names Cisco ASR, NCS and Catalyst 3850 platforms; it is a 10G part and will not run a 1G BiDi link. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? One strand instead of two
A bidirectional optic sends and receives on different wavelengths over a single single-mode strand, which halves the fibre you need. The price of that is pairing: each link needs one downstream and one upstream module.
Monitoring you can read
Digital diagnostics (DDM) let the switch report temperature, laser power and received light, so a dirty connector or a failing link shows up in the switch before users call.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
