The StarTech.com SFP1000EXST is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for long single-mode runs, reaching up to 40 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is MSA compliant and uncoded, for switches that accept standard optics, and bridges sites and campuses that a 10 km LX module cannot reach. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Plan both ends as 1000BASE-EX: it uses the same 1310 nm as a 10 km LX module, but StarTech.com does not publish the optical power, so we do not promise a link to an LX optic. StarTech.com also does not state whether short runs need an attenuator — tell us the real fibre length. It is uncoded, so Cisco or HPE switches that check optics may refuse it. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.

Digital diagnostics (DDM) let the host report temperature, laser power and received light, so a dirty connector or a failing link shows up before users call.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
