The StarTech.com SFP1000LXST is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is MSA compliant and uncoded, so it suits switches that accept standard optics — Ubiquiti, D-Link, NETGEAR, Supermicro and TP-Link among them — for links between buildings, floors and sites. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The module is uncoded. Switches that insist on their own brand of optics — many Cisco, HPE Aruba and Juniper models — may reject it; StarTech.com sells coded versions such as the Cisco-coded SFPG1320C and the HPE-coded J4859CST. It needs single-mode fibre and a port that runs 1G. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
