StarTech.com 189B-USBC-MULTIPORT 10-in-1 USB-C Dual-DisplayPort Multiport Adapter

2x DisplayPort 4K 60Hz100W PD pass-through6 USB portsGigabit Ethernet

The StarTech.com 189B-USBC-MULTIPORT is a 10-in-1 USB-C multiport adapter that adds two DisplayPort outputs for dual extended 4K 60Hz monitors, five USB 5Gbps ports, a USB 2.0 port, Gigabit Ethernet and 100W USB Power Delivery pass-through from one laptop USB-C port. It is designed for hot desks, remote workers and IT teams standardising dual-monitor setups on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS laptops.

Three USB-C 5Gbps and two USB-A 5Gbps ports connect modern and legacy peripherals, while a dedicated USB-A 2.0 port keeps keyboard or mouse dongles off the faster ports. The Realtek RTL8153E network chip supports PXE boot and Wake-on-LAN, and a 30.5 cm attached cable gives flexible placement.

The adapter uses DisplayPort MST (Synaptics VMM5220) to drive two independent screens; it consumes 15W from the pass-through budget and is tested by StarTech.com across 100+ monitors and major laptop brands.

Compatibility note: Dual extended displays rely on DisplayPort MST, which macOS does not support: on a Mac both DisplayPort outputs show the same (mirrored) image. The laptop USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and USB Power Delivery for pass-through charging; pass-through needs a separate USB-C charger connected to the PD input port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 189B-USBC-MULTIPORT support two separate screens on a MacBook?
No. macOS does not support DisplayPort MST, so on a MacBook the two DisplayPort outputs mirror the same image. For two extended displays on a Mac, use a Thunderbolt dock such as the 206UE-TB5USB4DOCK.
Can I connect HDMI monitors?
Yes, with passive DisplayPort to HDMI adapters or cables for 1080p and most 4K 30Hz screens; for HDMI 4K 60Hz use an active DisplayPort to HDMI cable such as the StarTech.com 2M-DP-HDMI-4K60-GR.
How much power reaches my laptop?
With a 100W USB-C charger connected, the laptop receives up to about 85W because the adapter reserves roughly 15W for its own ports.
Singular Expert Insight
For Windows laptops the 189B is a cost-effective way to get dual 4K 60Hz DisplayPort without a full dock, and six USB ports cover most desk setups. Mac users should look elsewhere because MST is not supported by macOS. Compare our docking stations and USB-C multiport adapters.
✓ Buy it if you need dual extended 4K monitors, plenty of USB ports and Ethernet from a Windows or ChromeOS USB-C laptop.
✕ Skip it if you use a MacBook and need two different images on the screens.
→ Also consider the 177B-USBC-MULTIPORT for a single 4K display with 140W PD and 2.5GbE.
