StarTech publishes what most hub makers keep quiet: the controller is a VIA VL817S, UASP is supported so an external SSD runs at its proper speed, and the enclosure is plastic. Compatibility — check before buying:
The host connector is USB-C. StarTech builds the same hub with the other connector as the H5A4A-USB-HUB, so check the letter in the part number — H5A4A is USB-A, H5C4A is USB-C, and the wrong one simply will not plug into your machine. The hub is bus-powered with no auxiliary power input: StarTech publishes 4.5 W per connector and does not publish a total figure, so treat it as a hub for keyboards, mice, receivers, dongles, flash drives, card readers and one bus-powered SSD rather than for several drives at once. There is no video output and no Ethernet, and it cannot charge a laptop. The 13 cm host cable is deliberately short — the hub sits immediately beside the machine.
