The StarTech.com MASFP10GBLR is a 10 Gbit SFP+ transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection. It is programmed as a Cisco Meraki MA-SFP-10GB-LR, so Meraki MS switches and MX security appliances accept it, and it supports digital diagnostics. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is coded for Cisco Meraki (MA-SFP-10GB-LR), for Meraki MS switches and MX appliances. For Cisco Catalyst or Nexus switches choose the Cisco-coded SFP10GLRST — same optics, different coding. It needs single-mode fibre and a 10G SFP+ port. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
